I did a search on this but I got a little confused. If I was to use a game that needs a dongle, do I just plug the USB key into the USB port on the MPU or do I have to have the little header board that has a USB port and use that USB port?

You can just use any USB port, either through the adapter, or on top of the mpu. The reason for the adapter was so the dongle could reside inside the MPU and be locked away for jurisdictional compliance issues.
