Title: BB2 Printer Comm Error
Post by: Pinaddicted on February 14, 2024, 07:09:35 PM
I've had a printer comm error recently that seems to be sporadic. I swapped printers with another machine and the error didn't follow the printer, so I assume the printer is not the problem. Funny thing is the machine is working ok with the original printer at the moment.

The following post was helpful, and I'm thinking maybe my power supply is possibly going out???

https://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=23090.msg173643#msg173643

The issue started after a normal power cycle. The installed game would not fully boot and I got the following errors...

A clear and game reload rendered a printer comm error in setup, but after a few attempts it's now working. :Scratch-Head:

Any suggestions???

I would closely inspect the printer harness from the backplane to see if there is any burned or frayed cabling.  If you have a meter, trace the cables to make sure they are good.  Intermittent problems like that are usually linked to connectivity issues.

I found that the metal tabs on the ribbon cable under the ticket holder (not the large one that runs along the side) were frayed a bit, I assume that could be the issue? BTW I've got an Epic 950 printer.

Also, would a sketchy connection at P7 on the power supply cause that error? The machine will reboot on its own occasionally also, generally only during the first 10 minutes after turning on. That Molex needs to be repaired, the yellow wire has been warm at some point before I got the machine.

Any wiring short will cause a machine to reboot - if a fuse doesn't blow.

Does anyone know what the yellow wire from P7 on the power supply goes to?

Open the door, turn off the power switch, pull the P7 Molex connector out of the power supply, and turn on the power switch.
One of your LCD screens will NOT come on - that's where the yellow wire goes.

Thanks for the info Bunker.

I've ordered parts to repair that Molex connector. A new Epic 950 printer is on the way also. I'll work thru the cabinet like Rick suggested looking for faulty wires including the printer harness.

My other BB2 works flawlessly, but this one definitely has some quirks. Most of the time it works fine though, I guess this one is my problem child.   :propeller:

Headers P7 and P8 go from power supply to your two LCDs.
Sometimes they burn up like this...>>>

Wow, that Molex in your picture is definitely toasted!!!

The power supply in my machine looks fine, but that same pin on the harness side is the issue.

Update...

This issue got so bad I had to disable the printer and unplug it, I kept getting the error message at boot up as seen in post #1. A new printer arrived today and I swapped the ticket tray part over to the original printer and all is good. I believe the small ribbon cable under the ticket tray was the problem, it was definitely compromised. How it got that way.... I have no idea.

Thanks for all the suggestions!!!
