Your BB1 is basically a computer running the Linux OS and a game.  The Bios is needed for the very basic interface between the software and the hardware.  In the bb1's case there have been two versions of the bios.  The original release dubbed -1160 and the latest release dubbed -2000.  If you are trying to run a game that uses an SSG type OS, you will need a -2000 bios.  I believe also that SSOS starting at 1800 also requires the newer bios.  The newer bios will run all existing software for the bb1, so it is recommended that the bios be updated to 2000.  Also originally the bb1 came with 256MB of Ram, there's an upgrade to 512MB which is the max on the bb1 mpu and it is recommended as well.
