Reels slip - J400
« on: December 01, 2020, 07:14:14 AM »
Since I had mentioned this in another thread on a different topic, I thought I'd start a new thread on this topic specifically.

I am having an issue with "reel slip" on my J400.  The reels spin as expected, but when it is time to stop the solenoid 'lets go' and the stop arm engages with the notched wheel.  But the arm doesn't "snap in" to the first slot it hits.  It will slip past that one and the next several before it finally stops.  Sometimes reel 1 never actually stops in a valid notch and just stops wherever it is when the reel spin motor finally turns off.  This leaves me between reel positions.

I had thought that the springs were not as strong as they should be, so I got some beefier springs.  They were too strong and the reel stop arms couldn't retract at all.

Is there something else to look for?  Do I just need to try dozens of different springs until I happen upon just the right springiness?

Thanks everyone for your continued support.  This forum has been WELL worth the contributing membership!

Try cleaning and oiling the bush that the stop arm turns on. Do them all while you're at it. Take the shaft off and clean everything.

Thanks Op-Bell!  I actually tried to, but couldn't get that spring pin out to release everything.  I'll keep working at it.  Might need to drill it out then replace.

Hi everyone.  Well, the reels and stop arms have been completely disassembled, cleaned, inspected, and adjusted to the best of my ability.  I still get the reel slip bad on reel 1.  I am at a total loss.  Any other thoughts from anyone?

It could be an electrical problem, like leakage in the transistor that drives the solenoid. It takes a big current to pull in, but even a slight leakage will keep it held in when it should release.
