What verifies the Boot?

When you throw in a Diagnostic 14-21 dongle, why doesn't it get corrupted the same way if you insert the dongle into a desktop computer? 
Is it because we use specific Family 014 Boot 1 & 2 chips?

Reason why I'm asking is because I have a warning from someone who sent me a message saying do not insert into a computer.

Well...when you think about it, the MPU of an AVP 3.0 is basically...a computer?

Well...when you think about it, the MPU of an AVP 3.0 is basically...a computer. 

It depends on the OS that is running on the computer you plug it in to.


Yes, you can plug them in, but don't ever try it on a computer running Windows 10!

I have a work bench desktop Windows XP operating system.
I've had problems even with XP leaving a small 4 byte file on my CF cards for IGT Visions.
I was able to remove the small inserted file and get them working right again.
I like backing up all of my chips, CF cards onto folders on my computer just in case I corrupt them by electrostatic electricity or while bench testing.
After all, it's possible that I'm not the ONLY one that has inserted chips in backwards....lol

Same way with a USB drive, just insert it into a XP computer and remove the added file and you are good to go.

I totally agree with you 6...a thumb drive is just another "device"...however, some thumb drives, otherwise known as "security dongles", are just that....they have encrypted locks and you cannot save them without written permission from the company that paid for the lock.

i put a license dongle I wasn’t going to need anymore into my computer just to see what it reads as it didn’t seem to do anything the game still boots fine. I am not brave enough to try it with an e key tho.

I saw I could get another dongle for $40 on ebay so I figured $40 is worth a lesson. 1182415-19910. Computer i first put it in an old xp computer that i keep for my cnc then tried in my window 10 laptop. I don’t think windoes can write to ikeys without specific software. The keys can’t even be read unless the software supplies a pin. Without the pin all I could see is a list of files and directories but could not actually see what the files were.

I was more worried damaging the computer than the dongle. I have some experience with similar dongles and kinda expected it to be fine. If they got damaged by being read by an un authorized computer then a lot of people would end up damaging the dongles to high end design software. A vinyl cutter i used to have actually used an older version of one.

And that’s possibly as far as im going on that subject as discussing the content of a license dongle gets scary close to the topic of piracy. I mainly just like knowing how stuff works.

The license dongles aren't USB storage. They are a security key.

It's a tiny microcontroller and an EEPROM.

It probably generates an encryption key that the machine uses to authenticate the license. Similar to authenticator apps that are used for banking and just about everything else these days.

Discussing this is not anything like piracy.

You can't copy them.

I'd be willing to bet that inserting one into a USB port on a computer would not damage it in any way.

I'm not willing to bet the price of a replacement eKey, so I'm not going to try it. :-)

Actually they are storage they are just storage that has to be accessed in a very specific way. Using the dev tools for the ikey 1000 you can see different directories on the dongle but you cant tell what the files are or open any of the folders without 2 passwords.
