Title: Nothing displayed while using set 15 chip
Post by: ThirdGenAmusement on May 17, 2022, 09:34:23 AM
I've got this s+ slot working except for the BV.  I got the slot as non working and kind of a basket case so I'm not totally sure how the machine was set up when I got it.  It had everything for a jcm BV except the head and transport so I put a 200 set up in it.
Again, everything works but the BV so I put the set 15 chip in the game prom slot to set the denom and turn the BV on but after placing the set chip in and powering the machine on I get nothing in displayed on the readouts. The reels are firm so I know the board is getting power.  I can replace the game prom and the machine works fine, just no BV of course.
The machine is running a sp878 and a SS 7860 chip but don't believe that matters.  Also the machine had no credits.   Any ideas as to why there is no display with set chip?  Btw, I tested the set chip in another s+ machine and it responded as it should so I can rule out a bad set chip.

Do you have a different SP chip to swap?  That's a type 0 game. Then try the set15 again.

Either the chip is dead or one of the legs was not seated right.
If the game plays normal with the game chip in place there is no issues with the MPU etc.

If you went through the SET procedure and it doesn't accept bills etc then we can start looking at other troubleshooting but your not even getting that far.......

Per Six' try it again - if it doesn't work I would get another SET chip.
A SET 15 is the right one.

Noted" You didn't clearly state when you tried the set chip in another machine.
If you stuck it into this MPU incorrectly, you may have destroyed it.

It's important that the SET chip was directionally inserted into the GAME socket with the notch facing the U39 chip.
Please check again.

If the SET still works in another machine as it should after you read this, the problem may lie with the questionable MPU that you're working with or the motherboard the MPU is inserted onto.

Thank you for the suggestions and feedback.

I had tried the set 15 chip in another s+ game of a different title after having no luck in the game I was wanting to use the bv in.  It did get the "0" in the coins played window with that machine so I believe it to be good.  I put it back into the machine I want to turn the bv on and there is nothing on the display.

It was suggested by someone to try a sp 731 game prom but when I put it in, once again no readouts.  The reels still had tension so the mpu is getting power.  Once I put the original sp 878 back in the machine fires up and plays.

Unless your putting the chip in backwards... and only doing it in this one machine (doubtful) ... This appears stranger by the minute.
Do you have a clear chip to run through it ?

It is very strange!   But strange is what I've been dealing with for the last 4 or so machines I'd gotten lol!   :banghead:

I did clear it, put the sp chip back in, fired it up, turned off, put the set chip in, fired it up and nothing on the read outs.  So I took the ss and sp chips out, put them in a known good board, then removed the sp chip and put the set 15 in, changed the 9-0 to a 9-1, set the denom, removed the set chip and replaced with the sp chip.  Once powered on the bv worked.

I then took the sp and ss chip from that board and put them in the original board and everything worked!  I dont know why the original board didnt like the set chip or other sp chips but it works.  Now just need to turn the reel sounds on and this is done!

Update
Turns out I think the reason why the machine was not accepting a different sp chip or set chip is because someone damaged the socket by putting the screw driver below the sp chip socket to remove it and pried instead of having the screw driver between the socket and the chip itself.  I wanted to update three sp chip to a1271 and messed with the machine more and was able to get a 1271 to work so I looked closer to the socket itself and noticed it was cracked in the area that would get damaged by putting the screw driver in the wrong spot.

Anyways, now machine is updated and working 100%

Thanks Jay!  I appreciate that.  I do search out answers prior to posting and notice many dont give a 'results' post so leaves me wondering if it worked or just how things ended lol.   I

I appreciate everyone's help and input here at NLG!  =)
