Title: Bally 742a Saved from the scrap yard
Post by: Amechanic on February 13, 2015, 01:44:59 PM
Hi ... I wanted to show what I saved from the scrap man.. It's a Bally 742a with a low serial number.. It missing the hopper and the wooden bottom, other then that it seems to be complete. The glass is in nice shape as is the cabinet. It even has a topper! I'm planning in trying to restore it this spring. I have a second 742 I picked up a couple years back that still worked, but is in horrible condition. I'm hoping the hopper will transfer to this one. I gave a whole $25 for the scrap yard machine. Here are a few pictures, sorry if they are a bit fuzzy, phone pics..

Thanks Dave. Not too sure when I'll get into it due to the extreme cold weather here. Right not its sitting in the garage awaiting it turn in line. I'm glad I didn't tear down that other complete 742, came dang close 2-3 times last fall.

Gary, that would have been a real shame if it got destroyed as junk. It's such a classic and the glass and reels look pretty good. Know what you mean about the cold, same in Minn. High of about zero today. Really can slow you down.  Good luck when you get to it and thanks for saving it!

I pulled the res bundle out and was surprised to see that everything's there. The reel tins are a bit bent up, and the strips are in decent condition. The only wiring issues I see are behind the hopper. Beau plugs loose and possible damage to pin sockets and the transformers loose. I'm glad it was locked or the would have scrapped the transformer for its copper. Looks promising.. Tighten up the loose items and add a cord to see if it power up, but not this weekend.  We're looking at going down to minus 9-15 degrees tonight. It's 12 out now and the winds blowing at 30 mph!! Brrrr..
