Toaplan Games
« on: May 04, 2014, 06:38:52 PM »
Model: Out Zone
Symptom: Dead

Game would sometimes try to start but the address and data busses on the CPU would stop running in about 2 seconds. Resoldered 2 surface mount ICs and replaced a bad 68000-10 CPU.

Game would play but then would be stuck moving up. Replaced a broken SIP resistor network acting as a pull up on the game inputs to finish the repair.

Model: Hellfire
Tip: Jumper settings for ROMs

O = Jumper Open
C = Jumper in place

Main Program ROMs:

23C1000 ROM: JP1 O, JP2 C, JP3 O, JP4 O
27C301 EPROM: JP1 O, JP2 C, JP3 C, JP4 O
27C010 EPROM: JP1 C, JP2 O, JP3 O, JP4 C

Background ROMs:
23C1000 ROM: JP5 C, JP6 O, JP7 O, JP8 O
27C301 EPROM: JP5 C, JP6 O, JP7 O, JP8 C
27C010 EPROM: JP5 O, JP6 C, JP7 C, JP8 O

Sprite ROMs:
23C1000 ROM: JP9 O, JP10 O, JP11 C, JP12 O
27C301 EPROM: JP9 C, JP10 O, JP11 C, JP12 O
27C010 EPROM: JP9 O, JP10 C, JP11 O, JP12 C

These jumpers affect the whole bank.

Take caution when desoldering the power and ground traces on this PCB. They are very heavy and hard to desolder cleanly.

Model: Hellfire
Symptom: Dead. Parts robbed.

Replaced missing ROMs with a set from a second board. Reset the ROM type jumpers for the Program ROMs. Tested. Board attempted to boot but had severe graphics corruption. Patched 3 dead traces for the dual-port video RAM. Board booted to a RAM CHECK FREE FF03FF ERROR message. Reflowed the SMT custom IC and patched one dead trace to fix the error. Board booted but had background corruption and no sprites. Patched trace on Background ROMs to fix background issues and tested. Patched multiple dead traces and replaced a previously installed socket and the PROM at 6B. Jumpered a pulled power pin plated thru hole on the PROM. Tested sprites successfully. Replaced 2 missing 470uf caps and 4 incorrect radial caps with axial caps in the sound section. Tested. Replaced all 28-pin background and sprite Mask ROM sockets with 32 pin sockets and set jumpers for EPROMs. Installed new ROM set. Tested.
