IGT with no display. Double Diamond
« on: March 05, 2022, 05:11:06 PM »
Hello! I'm new to slots, but have repaired pinballs/arcades for years. Hoping one of you pros can kick me in the right direction. I got a freebie slot. When powered up, the florescent lights come on, but nothing else. No display, no error codes, and reels are loose. I checked all connectors, reseated ROMs, cleaned molex connector to motherboard. Voltages on 6 pin connection to motherboard all check out. 24vac, 8vac, 7vac. MPU has a red LED on the board, but it didn't come on when powered up. I'm not sure what this LED is for, status light or fault? I don't want to assume it's an MPU without checking here first. Appreciate any advice.  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Are you sure you got that molex connector on the motherboard cleaned up good?  From the photo it looks like it has the not uncommon scorch mark on it from overheating.

The LED is an activity light for external serial comms, so you shouldn't see it do anything.

Thanks. I'll double check that molex. It does have a scorch on that pin.

Cleaned pin again. Verified continuity from molex pin to underside of motherboard. Any thing else I can test?

It's always fun getting something that doesn't work and you don't know what's been done to it previously.   Post a picture of the MPU board, and we'll see if anything looks out of place there.

That's quite a hack job on the battery.  I don't think it's the cause of your problem though.  Measure the voltage at the wires where the battery is supposed to mount anyways and see what you get.

:rotfl: I agree. Someone installed a battery holder at some point. I think they used a whole roll of solder... I have 3vdc on the battery terms on the board.

I had the same problem on a previous post. Turned out to be a bad Game chip.

Know what chip is considered the game chip? A couple chips are numbered on my MPU pic. I'm guessing it is one of those.

The 3 fuses on the power supply box are good? Top to bottom?

Pull them out and check each one.

If the lights come on the voltages are good at the motherboard then so are the fuses.

With the MPU board in place - power on, are the reels stiff or can you freely spin them.

If you can freely spin them then the MPU is not getting power from the mother board.
Even with no game or reel chip the reels will be stiff if the slot is getting power (won't play of course) but the reels will be stiff.

This is a picture of the motherboard with the burnt connector.

The 4 wires in the molex connector need to be making contact with the 4 pins on the board.
Take a white eraser and clean the 4 pins, and perhaps a pen knife to scrape any scorch from the pins
You can order a new harness - wiggling the connector will sometimes bring it back to life.

Once you have stiff reels we can move on to other reasons of why your game won't play,
As to your other question.......
The game chip is in a socket that is labeled GAME right on the MPU board and the reel is right next too it also labled on the MPU board.

Thanks for pointing me back to the molex. I reflowed solder to the pins on the connector and she is back to life! Reels are locked, and it plays. I'm not getting credits or winner paid on the display. If I turn the rest key, it will show numbers on each display. It looks like some admin function because the numbers will cycle as I hit buttons. Am I doing something wrong? You guys are awesome BTW. Your input is much appreciated!

The reset key is a jackpot reset key.
When the key is turned with the door closed it brings you into statistic mode.

If you want to change settings you open the door and use the white button.

Whe you play and win do the coins go to hopper or credits ? If they get paid you can change them to go to credits. The only other way to get credits is to insert a bill. Again when you win does it show winner paid xx ?

If you can't afford to lose you can't afford to win.

I figured it out. If I hit the cash/credit button it switches to display for cash/credits, hit it again and it switches to quarters and doesn't display. Appreciate everyone's help! Works like a champ now.
