Title: Alice and the enchanted mirror - no topbox
Post by: Rane420 on April 07, 2016, 02:42:20 PM
Hello all,

I've seen where several people have been running Alice without a topbox.  Are there any special configurations needed for it to run properly?

A couple weeks ago I tried to load it up and after configuration, it would stall out when loading the game.  My assumption was there was a glitch on the card and my vendor was willing to exchange the card.

I've since seen similar behavior on my BB1 when I tried to load Griffins Gate in a cabinet without an EBB.

So, before I go thru the whole configuration progress again, I thought I'd put the question out there and save myself some headache if there is a tweak required somewhere along the way.

Just needs BB2 with dual monitors.  I had some trouble with it when using the last/latest H13.xxx family OS version (the super quick one) for some reason it would come up, let me spin once and then it would freeze and I had to reboot.  Also, it didn't like multi-denom set ups as it would crash when I tried to change it on the game screen.  Repeated this several times until I decided to try the OS that is closer to what is called for on the game card.
Works fine now.  I have a feeling it has to do with my JUR chip which is Columbia and my Bettor TITO system as well.............??? :Scratch-Head:

Thanks! I will make sure to use the OS closest to what the game calls for.  I think I have a couple of the family 13 ones as well.

Hello again, I think Alice is just playing hard to get at this point.  I have both the Mad Tea Party and the Enchanted Mirrors.  Both exhibit the same behavior.  I can perform the clear, complete config, the load screen says it's 100% complete then the screen goes black and the game is never to be seen.  I've tried OS H13.34 and OS 13.30.  I've set it for single denomination only.  I have the latest and greatest BIOS and the Mississippi jurisdiction chip.  I can load up Little Red, Princess Bride and Giants Gold without issue.

Does anybody have any thoughts?  I don't have an OLED button panel, but Rick was kind enough to confirm that Alice did not require it for me in a much earlier thread.  unless maybe we differing versions of the game that doesn't seem like a likely culprit.

Same version of the game I have.  Have you tried just disconnecting the top monitor from your MPU.  It is the only thing I can think of.

I have both Alice versions and it will run without the topbox and without the OLED.  I usually turn off the top monitor because it looks funny.

Thanks guys.

I tried unplugging the top box and had no success, but something did occur to me.  I did put the latest and greatest bios in while I was getting my BB2 CABINET up and going, but that was using my NXT1 that I was borrowing from my BB1.  I have no clue what the best bios for a NXT2 is.  I've attached a photo of what I'm running.  Maybe that will be what cures me.  Something has to get Alice runnin'

If the sticker is not incorrect, that is the latest bios.

Just for kicks, do you another SJUR you can try?

I had one that wouldn't let me print.  I'll have to see if I can find it.  Which one would you recommend?  I'm not opposed to pick one up that is known to work with Alice :-)

I know for sure it works with California Tribal.

Well, I may have to see if I can round up a CA tribal chip.  I found my NV juris chip, but that didn't work the magic I'd hoped it might.

In case anybody has some paint drying and would like marginally better viewing, I made a YouTube video of my machine not loading Alice.  :-)

I stopped the video when the screen went black as nothing happens after that.  I've left it that way for an hour or more with no change except it seems like eventually the top screen will go blank as well.

When the bottom screen goes black, if you turn the key do you get a blue screen with error messages or does it stay black.

I'll have to confirm it, but I'm pretty sure the key and diagnostic button had no effect.  I'll load it up again tomorrow to double check, but once it goes black I couldn't get any response from the machine with anything I tried.

Has the game ever loaded?  Maybe it's the game itself.

I have both the Alice games each from separate vendors and even sent the first one I got back thinking the same thing and was provided a replacement.  It's really strange.  I've loaded Lil' Red, The Princess Bride, Giants Gold, Goldfish 2 and Jungle Wild all without incident.

I loaded mine up today while watching your video and mine zips right through the config yours hangs at the end which is odd.  Hopefully you can figure it out

Thank you for checking it out.  I certainly appreciate the comparison.  I might try finding someone locally with a BB2 cabinet willing to let me see if my MPU will bring it up in their machine and if not confirm the games work for them.  That would at least start to narrow down the possibilities.  I thought about trying it in my BB1 but am not sure that would end up telling me anything or not.  Might just tell me I did a bad job forcing me BB1 to meet the minimum NXT2 requirements :-)

Silly question, but I have to ask.
Why did you select NO Printer when you clearly have one. and why did you not select and validation. ??

Fair question, and two reasons :-) Trying to get Alice up and going I've been through the clear and config process many, many times now.  Given my success rate, I foresee as many more in the future.  It's my wife's favorite slot in Vegas so of course it is the one game I can't get the machine to play.

But, to answer the question, I knew it wasn't going to get past the black screen so I was shortcuting those steps.  If it had worked, I could still have used the key for cash out.  But also, I had changed my jurisdiction chip to a Nevada one that had come in my BB1 to see if that had any impact.  It didn't, but it doesn't have the option to select 'Standard' when configuring the printer and the available options 'System' and 'Something I can't remember that is also not standard' cause an error if I say that I have a printer but it can't connect to the casino servers.  With the other games I usually set the printer up, in this case I just didn't feel like swapping the juris chip back first.  All that said, I have tried bringing Alice up with a chip that allows the 'Standard' option and sadly it is no happier for it :-(

Just a thought.................

I have a printer and TITO system and I have to set the validation as SYSTEM.  Not sure if that is how you usually run yours..................????

Your right, I do remember that now.  Standard is for no tito, system is for tito which I do not have YET :-)

Not sure if I'm looking at the right thing, but here are some screenshots of my system information.  I'm thinking maybe I'm running with one gig of ram and if Alice takes two it might explain the freeze when loading.  Can anybody confirm or deny my line of thought?

You should have 2GB of ram anyways, that may be your problem.

Thanks Rick.  I didn't even think to check this until today.  When I first bought the MPU it had 2gb in it.  I sent it back due to issues and they replaced the Adastra board. I'm assuming the replacement must have come with the 1gb card...

Quick update, the original vendor for the MPU was able to comp me a 2 GB ram card so hopefully once that is in I will finally get Alice up and running.  My fingers shall remain firmly crossed until that point.

Corey,

Did the 2gb load up the game?

Thanks for asking :-)

As of 8:13 the package is in Phoenix, but expected delivery is quoted at 4/5.  As you can probably tell, I await it anxiously.

I'll post my results once I play with it.  If successful, it will probably be in all CAPS and with lots of joyous punctuation!  If not, it may also be in all CAPS, but the punctuation will represent a different set of emotions...

Awesome, now we know for sure.  It should be standard procedure to upgrade to 2GB from the beginning.  Something to keep in mind for the troubleshooting pipeline.

Thanks again to everyone for their help on this one!

Yesterday was a pretty good day!  The first clear and reboot with the RAM brought up Mad Tea Party.  Before bringing up the Enchanted Mirrors I added my OLED panel and it fired up without a hitch.  It was so nice to experience the plug and play scenario, rather than the plug and troubleshoot process I've grown to know and love.

Charles sent me the topbox video files for Alice, so I'm still playing with that piece to get a Raspberry Pi up and going for it, but once I have that done I don't know what will fill the void of my quest for Alice...I'm sure my next casino trip will provide some direction.

I got into this so I'd have the slot machines, but the longer I play with them I'm not sure if I like pressing the spin or diagnostic button more.

Can someone explain to me how you use the video files on the top box?  I was thinking of getting Alice software but I don't like how the top monitor functions without a modification.  I did something similar on my Top Gun machine, running a slideshow on a media player.  How exactly does this work, is it interactive with the game or runs independently?
