Title: Setting up my Alphas for the 1st time, voucher printer com error
Post by: slotdoofus on November 30, 2016, 10:53:44 AM
I'm setting up my Alphas for the 1st time.

One one machine, I'm getting the following error:
Voucher printer com error

I have a CA tribal installed. I have the machine control set to SAS and the voucher out to standard.

Am I missing something else?

Look at the printer's status light (not the one where the ticket comes out, the one on the side where you push the button to feed the paper through).  If it is not green, it is not communicating with the system because:

1.  out of paper, causes an off-line tilt, which stops communications with the cabinet.
2.  Printer is not flashed for use on alpha cabinets.  (Parts complete doesn't mean the parts go with the machine)
3.  Printer is not pushed all the way in.
4.  Check printer harness to make sure it is not loose or unplugged.

On the printer, the green ready light is on.

Thes 4 alphas are the ones that Chris Day had listed for sale here on NLG. As far as I know, all of these were pulled from the casino in May of this year. The only thing Chris had removed was the BVD's. I've since, installed MEI's.

All of these machines have the Gen2 printers with new stacks of tickets installed.

At the moment, I have 2 of these Alphas giving me that same error.

The printers are probably bad.  Swap the printer from an alpha that is working to make sure.  Just because they came out of the casino, doesn't mean the printers are good.  I have thrown away probably 1/2 the printers I've ever gotten.    Like I said, parts complete, which is how casino's usually sell them, doesn't meant parts are working.  A lot of techs just put any printer on a machine, even bad ones from parts.  That is why slot dealers charge a lot more for a fully shopped machine, and why a parts complete (or semi-complete) is a lot cheaper.

Thanks Rick,

The one machine I had running isn't now. I needed the extension cord for another machine, so I unplugged the working machine, then plugged it into a different out let. The machine boots up now, but is CONTINUOUSLY prints out this ticket....I can't get it to stop.

That is a self-test ticket.  Usually prints when you hold down the feed paper button and power on the printer.  My guess, the button is stuck.  Push it a few times with the printer off so you don't loose more paper and then power up to see if it still prints the tickets.

I just tried that Rick.

Turned the machine back on...it immediately starts spitting out tickets again.

I've never seen that behavior.  I would try the printer on a different machine to see if it does the same thing.  If it doesn't, then it's probably a harness issue.  If it does, then there's something with the printer.

I've tried 4 different printers now...3 of them give me the voucher printer com error, the 4th one says printer open error...although it's closed.

Out of the 5 Alphas I have, the only one working is the Monte Carlo. It has a known working gen2 printer, (from spininc).

I'm going to test each of the other 4 printers in the Monte Carlo today.

So far, I've tested one...it is telling me to remove the voucher, (which has already been removed).

I'm curious, since all of the Gen2 printers look like new, is there anyone that does bench testing/repair on these Gen2 printers?

I'd hate to have to buy 4 more of these things.

All 4 of the printers are testing bad in the Monte Carlo.

2 have the voucher printer com error, 1 prompts me to remove ticket, 1 continuosly spits out tickets.

I talked to Spin about sending all 4 of these to them to have them re-flashed. Maybe that "might" solve the problems.

I think you are better off buying known working printers.  Sometimes you can buy a bunch for like $30 each.  I think by the time you pay spin-inc and pay shipping two ways, you are going to be over the $30 range.  Flashing might fix the ones with the com error (if they don't have bally firmware), but the one that spits tickets might require servicing.  The one that prompts you to remove tickets, have you opened up the front of the prrinter and checked for stuff jammed on the sensor or something like it?

Thanks Rick,

Yes, I've cleaned the optics for the remove voucher printer.

I'm kinda leaning towards just buying the futurelogic gen1's from spin.

I agree, I think the 2 w/ the com error "might" be fixable w/ a re-flash, but w/ shipping both ways, it might not be worth my while, (money).

I have 3 out of the 4 up and running. The 4th one is giving me this error at boot-up:

Error: No personality SMI's found

What does this mean?

I'm loading Double Gold.

I was able to get past that error screen. I pulled/re-seated the chip on the CPU daughterboard.

I was able to get everything set up...went to "return to game"...this screen comes up.

I've replaced the cherry switch on the main door, already....still no luck.

I am able to get the Double Gold running, but I think it has the wrong software/game card(s).

The game card is marked:
ASGS9000C000-07

The OS card is marked:

I think this game has the Silver & Gold game software

On the game types you are running, the software paytables are in the eproms in the pci card.  The cf cards are only the OS and the software bridge that tells the machine to use the eproms on the PCI card.  That particular CF card is same in all those machine types.

Where is the PCI card?
Title: Re: Setting up my Alphas for the 1st time, voucher printer com error

It's the only removable card in the mpu.  It is the one with all the eproms on it.

I see the card mounted vertically on the CPU, right next to the power supply. Is that where the actual game software resides? Which chip(s)?

There are a bunch of Eproms installed on sockets.  It was Bally's way of extending the life of their jurisdiccionally approved software.  In the earlier Bally 6000 platform you would install the eprom with the paytable required by the casino (the percentage holdback).  Since the Bally 9000 platform contains all the available paytables, they got around it by installing all the paytable eproms in one board and the software takes care of selecting which one you require.  I've never had the PCI Eprom board, but I've seen a few and know in general how it works.  My best guess is that the board you have has either faulty chips or the eprom PCI board might be bad.

I noticed, while setting up these 4 Alphas, that when I select the game, there is no payout selection option. I have to accept the default, (only choice).

I'll try swapping the PCI eprom board, on the one machine that's giving me fits.

Does anyone burn these chips, (if I happen to need them)?

That explains why hidden paradise and pirates trove have the same 2 chips on that board...they're clones of each other.
I tried putting the 2 eproms on a known working PCI card...When I'm done setting the machine up, and hit return to game, I get the screen saying pending status, open door M

I van't get past that. I guess the eprom(s) are bad for the double gold machine.

After swapping chips, PCI cards, CPU boards, I'm convinced the chip(s) are bad on the Double Gold.

Open door M is also associated with the middle door (the one in front of the reels) so you might want to check that switch as well.

Rick,

You really know your stuff.....I had tyo push the cherry switch button about a dozen times....but the machine is running now.

I'm used to working on IGT's.....I see the door M and assumed it was the bottom door....doh!

Thanks again for all the help.

I've noticed one BIG difference between these 4 Alphas and my Monte Carlo.

On these Alphas, I don't get the reel glass bezel light show on winnings. Would that be because the game software doesn't support it?

The reel glass lamp bezel works fine in test mode.

All those games that use the PCI Eprom board are vestiges from the Bally 6000 series which did not have the led bezel, thus the games don't know it even exists.  You would have to obtain a game theme that is a native s9000 title.  I've always just dealt with the elite s9000's (the ones with LCD in the topbox), but the cabinets are very similar, so other than the SMI isssue, pretty much all the other common errors are the same as the elites.

Thanks Rick....I learn several new things w/ these slots every day.

It's a shame I won't get the bezel light show, but for little money I have in these machine, I'm happy.
