Title: Summit Wild Joker poker machine ????????
Post by: wrldpc4all on June 11, 2014, 09:28:39 PM
I just got a Summit Coin LTD Wild Joker poker machine. It doesn't say the model but the serial #10197-V and I think it was made in 1985 from what the tag says. Can anyone tell me the model or any information about it. Also looking for a manual with a diagram. The hopper is not getting any power and I want to trace the line but need a diagram of the boards.

Any help in identifying the machine and finding the manual will be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the site.
In my opinion the Summit Video Slot machines are the least know and liked of the slots.
Summit took retired Bally slot and refurbished them to make modern and updated machines.
Good luck

Is the hooper by Bally, can I use Bally parts in a Summit machine?  Is the Bally V-1000 series model compatible with this machine? My dad and I got almost everything to work but the hooper, so it has to be reset every time a jack pot hits. Is there any other machine I can swap out parts with. The hooper seems to work but does not get any power. My dad thinks its because a small board that connects to the hooper may be defective and needs to be replaced. But without a manual and a wiring diagram it is difficult to determan.

I was thinking I might just gut the machine and convert it to a modern poker machine but its rarity screams at me to bring it back to life. Though it's almost there if I can only fix the hooper.

Below are pictures of the parts that may have to be replaced

Post a good close up picture of the hopper and the hopper board.
We will see what we can see

With out info on how it works you are going to have fun .
You can try shot gunning that board to see if it is the problem.
I would replace the transistor first.

My dad doesn't understand what you mean by "shotgunning the board" Also where can we get another transistor

First reflow the solder on the pins of the connector on the board as that style likes to crack the solder joints on the board. You  have 1 transistor, 2 IC chips, 3 capacitors, 4 resistors on the board that I can see.
The transistor is the black chip standing on 3 wires on the bottom Rt of the picture.
The transistor is a electric switch and would be the first one I'd replace as they carry more load.
The 2 IC's are multiple transistors  in one package and lower power.
So I would replace the transistor first then both IC's, if you search the
part # on the transistor or IC's you can find them as I get a lot of the older
parts like those from eBay .

After downloading a Summit reel diagram and checking the board we found that the problem is the hooper control chip
I've uploaded the diagram with the defective part highlighted.

Does anyone know how I can acquire this chip or come up with an alternative solution

You could try to contact HMS Electronics.. It looks like the charge for phone support, but do have an email link.. I contacted them a while back using email, and got a response back fairly quick.. If you send them a picture of your board them might have parts or a replacement. Looks like mostly Summit slot, but you never know??

You could try Larry Weber at K-Lar in Vegas..  Nice guy and will talk to you. Phone number is 702-363-9998. They work on a bunch of the earlier video poker machines. I didn't see it listed on there web page but its worth a phone call.

Not many components on the board. Could replace them all,  the transistor as mentioned and the IC's would be suspect. The one IC   looks like it may be awful warm running , not sure why if it was. The square black component is a rectifier  I believe , changes AC to DC and do go bad. Should have AC going in and check the two outputs for DC out.

Theres 2 sets of numbers they are CD4047BE & RCAH445. I've been referencing the wiring diagrams for a Summit Systems reel slot machine. Do you think the hopper boards are compatible with the poker machine?

Not sure if a reel slot hopper is similar? Slight possibility.

Thanks so much for finding the IC but my dad said that if he removes the old IC he's afraid it will damage the hopper board. Do you know of anyplace I can send the board to have that done. I will even buy the new IC and send it with the board. I've been calling around for the last 3 days looking for this board. More then half of the people I contacted sujested that I shouldn't even try to fix it because I have almost no chance of finding all the parts needed to conplete the restoreastion. My dad fixed all the issues with the machine (and there were to many to even list them all). We've almost given up hope till you found the IC for us. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU I cant say it enough i'm so very greatfull to all the people on this website that took time out of there day to help me. Now I've got a secound wind and if I can find someone to repair the board I'm going to contact all the people who told me to just junk the machine and say " %^&* you all it's fixed" Then I'm going to make a donation to this website because I would NEVER have done it without the help from the members of this site

There is a guy in Santa Rosa, CA (HMS-electronics.com) that repairs Summit boards. He is the ONLY guy that repairs Summit boards that we know of that is reliable. He has a "trade in" program and will not charge for repair unless they actually NEED repairing. Dicks awesome! Call him and see for yourself!  :cool_thumb_up:

hello there, I have just acquired one of the same Wild Joker Poker machines and was hoping to hear that you got your up and running. if so, would you be able to send me some pics of the internals. after looking at the insides of my machine i feel that my machine is missing some components/boards. but most importantly my monitor unit is not pulled in to any boards and has three plug that are just hanging there. i really hope you can help me out with this and that i can get this machine back to working order.

Yes it's the same exact machine..........But the MPU boards that CVSlots are talking about are not. You are new here, please listen. While they were looking for help with their SCL machine, this guy only works on Summit Systems machines. They are 2 completely different machines. CVslots didn't realize at the time there were 2 different companies. Summit Systems were Bally electromechanical machines retrofitted with solid state hardware supplied by Summit Corp. Now these were the same companies originally but SCL couldn't make it and made a deal with Bally to refit their machines to make them more palatable to the consumer. NOT the same at all. Boards completely different. That guy does not work on SCL stuff at all. And it is completely different. The OP had a machine like yours but this was before people realized they were 2 different machines and companies. I'm sorry, but this guy can't help you. Been there done that. Read reply #11 on the previous page. Says it all.

i really hate to be a bother, but at first the original poster thought his was a SCL machine. to me everything i see from my pics and theirs seem to match. but what i do see is that my machine seems to be missing a board in the center board cage, when i compare pics.

i do understand what your saying tho. i guess im trying to not give up hope is all.

Tom you are not a bother. I enjoy helping you, I'm just trying to help you understand. The OP on that thread does or at least did have a Summit Coin Ltd. machine. And it probably is just like yours. But his machine is not a Summit Systems machine. Now SCL did use parts from other manufacturers such as Bally. I changed a solenoid out on mine and used a bally one which was identical. If you are missing a board that's going to be bad, because SCL used their own boards. Now the OP machine was complete but needed repair and I don't know if they got it going or not. He's still a member here and was on this morning. Comparing to his machine would be a giant step. Let me know what you find out.

Well it sounds like the OP from other post may be the big help. And if he has a manual that's great. You may want to pull the main processor board out and see if it has a battery on it. It's likely dead.

What does the batter unit look like and where would it be located? I've checked the fuses, they all seem to still be good and intact.

Hopefully I'm able to hear back from the Original poster with good news. If he has the manual then I feel like posting it on here would be a great help to others.

I'll post a pic of the board off my machine with the old battery on it. Then I'll post your board location. If you remove the wires and the 4 screws that hold the cover on you should be able to see the boards. See if there is a blue or green battery on one of them. Make sure to note how those connectors come off to get them back on correctly. It's possible they might even go on upside down.

I've added a pic of Wrldpc4all's boards with the front off.

Alrighty, aslong as the batter is that big RC Car motor looking thing(big cylinder). I know what your talking about now. Mine is green. Where would I got to get a new battery?
Title: Re: Summit Wild Joker poker machine ????????
Post by: Shaggy on September 03, 2016, 09:28:51 AM
Tom I think you're looking at a capacitor. The battery (if it has one) will look more like the blue one on my board picture, unless I'm misunderstanding you. Can you post some pics of the boards? The ones from 2014 aren't very clear. I would like to see what is inside yours. And you know I have a reel slot not a video poker but the insides are very similar. It may not even have a battery at all. On mine there is no way to change any settings (and I doubt on yours too) so the battery was likely only for storing accounting information for the Casino. Thus it probably doesn't even need to be on the machine. My concern is if there is a battery it may have leaked on the board and caused damage. And if there are no extra boards, that would have to be repaired. Check with Wrldpc4all and see if his has or had a battery on it. I would guess it originally did, but may have been removed.   :Please_Post_Pictures_2clr:

here is a closer looker at my board box. i dont believe i see a battery in there, and im pretty sure the battery isnt the big green cylinder on the right side.
Title: Re: Summit Wild Joker poker machine ????????
Post by: Shaggy on September 03, 2016, 01:48:14 PM
I'm with you. I don't see a battery in there. I think the green cylinder is a capacitor. What i would do is this. With the power off, one at a time remove each of the 3 boards on the right. Pull the connector off and the board just slides out toward you. It has a little track top and bottom that it slides in and lines it up with the pin connector on the  back wall. Check to make sure no pins are bent over etc. Then on the board end and the pin connectors they line up on I used a spray electrical contact cleaner. Then replace the board.  Those connections oxidize over the years. I would do that for all 3 of the boards. That's what I did for my machine (and replace 2 fuses) and it went from dead to lit up and ready to play. I had some reel work also but that's not your case. That's a good place to start. I had a problem with my old Games of Nevada video poker machine and that was the culprit. A good place to start. I also recommend using a meter (if you didn't) to check those fuses. I've seen fuses that looked perfectly fine but didn't have continuity from one end to the other.

Just pulled all the boards out, they look pretty good to me and I've seen some pretty bad ones in my day with my slot machines. Going to hit them with the compressor and some light air to blow off some of the dust. And then examine the connections. Oddly enough the prior owner of this Machine numbered and labeled everything as to where it supposed to go. Obviously I wish you would've left this machine alone and left all the connections in it seeing as I have no idea where the monitor chassis plugs into.

Also, after looking at all the boards I've been able to date this machine all the way back to 1983.

I also found what looks to be a little bit of scorching on one of the boards. I'm going to post another picture of the board with a close-up of the scorching hopefully there something I can do to take care of this. Any ideas or ways to go around it?

Post extension with scorched section of board.

Also just noticed something of concern with the back of the brain box. Looks like one of the copper leads looks slightly damaged. Could definitely use another opinion now. Also on another board looks like something maybe missing off of it there are sadder marks but there looks to be like there's a pin missing.

The last picture depicts the board with what I believe is missing a connector possibly for the monitor chassis. Could be wrong though. But it does look like something may be missing there.

Your last picture looks like where your battery belong. If you compare your picture 1945 with Shaggy's picture if his board with the battery on the board, you can see it's the same board. If you install a new battery your machine might come to life? As for the board with the scorching can we see what on the top side?

Tom, Amechanic is right. That is the battery spot. I know very little about board work, but I see what you're talking about with the hot spot. A battery may make it work, but I honestly know. I'm guessing it was removed prior to it leaking and causing board damage. You can try putting one on and see if it helps. The thing is afterwards if you get the machine going, try removing it and see if it still works. If so leave it off. My 2¢.
