Title: need 1960's-1970's ballys 25 cent hopper
Post by: miked5131 on November 06, 2018, 08:46:19 AM
my hopper stopped working, I think it is the solenoid or possibly the motor, anyway, if someone has one to sell or info on how to fix it contact me please

more information on the hopper or picture of the hopper and machine it came from.  pretty sure we can guide you through it, just can't say until we know more.

Need to see if it turns over by hand.. Release the brake on the motor and reach inside the hopper to see if you can spin the hopper coin wheel.. If it spins over then we can talk you through bench testing it.. I have see the gearboxes freeze up, because the grease inside drys up and hardens..At that point you will need to drill a small hole in the gearbox casting on the top side and add a few drops of oil..

I can’t tell much by your pics. They are too close. I need to see what relay it’s from. Same with the pic of the broken wire, just a little farther away.

Pic can be no larger then 1000k per pic up to 5 per posting. I email my pics back to my self. When sending using my I Phone it gives me the option on how big I want to send the files. I then can save the pics I sent to my self and up load them here.

Measure it with a Ohm meter to see if it reads 470 Ohms, those usually don't fail, they are usually used to current limit and protect a coil.If you would provide a picture of the side of the coil in question showing the part number on the coil you would have a better chance of someone having it.

the wires that go into the 470 thing are loose.. the part number on the coil says KKN 850/336.. I cant find that either on the internet I found a KKN 333

Sure, go ahead, put a 1/4 watt resistor in place of a ceramic power resistor.Let me know what happens to the resistor upon power up.

I know, I selected the wrong one and its going to fry.. but I don't want to change my order.. im more excited to fine the coil though.. what wattage should I get.. and HEY IM NEW TO THIS!

miked5131,

Have you checked the resister as Badbaud suggested earlier? It should read 470 ohms on your meter. The 1/4 watt one you found will not work! You will just be wasting your time with it :burningresistor: .

If your ceramic power resister is bad it is probably a 10 watt.

Also, your last post. Do you require a capacitor too?

I don't know if it is a resister or a capacitor .. its about 1 1/2 inches long kinda rectangle, white thing and says "470" on it..  and then there is another one that look like a small tube and that one is black and red

miked5131,

The photo you posted before is a ceramic resistor. The other item you mention may also be a resistor. I think you will need to post some clear photos of the following.

1. The overall game or post the model.
2. An overall photo of the old coil you have.
3. A photo showing the area of the "a small tube and that one is black and red"

miked5131,

Since, I still cannot clearly see what the tube things are you mention are. I am going to assume that one is a diode and one is a resistor. They are probably good but, you will need to check them with a meter.

Amechanic cam probably confirm this since he has one there.

Is this the resistor?  What the numbers on that coil? The numbers are very important. They are the ratings of the coil.

On mine the resistor happens to be green. It is  47 ohms 5 watts, though a 10 watt will do just as well. It is wired across the relay coil, and its purpose is to suppress sparks on the wiper disk as the wipers move between segments. The other, smaller striped part is also a resistor. It's a 9.3k, one watt, and its purpose is to feed a small amount of current to the relay during that short interruption when the wiper changes segment, to stop it dropping out. YOU WILL NOT FIND A 9.3K RESISTOR ANYWHERE. It's a non standard value. Use a 10k, one watt if you've lost the original.

The coil you showed on page 1 of this thread can be repaired. What happened is one of the terminal tags on the white frame broke off, or more probably was torn off when it caught on something. The short stub of enamel wire is what's left, and a person skillful with a soldering iron can attach to that and reattach it. I suggest winding the wire of the resistor several times through the hole where the tag used to be, and soldering to that.

Use a Xacto knife and carefully scrape the enamel off of the wire where it is going to be soldered.
