The Varta is not needed, all it does is leak.
Can you get into setup options and go to I/O 4.2 to auto configure Netplex?
Have you checked to make sure the power supply behind the reels is plugged all of the way in?

Here's a question for our friends who sell us these games to play at home:

Why not remove the VARTA batteries before you ship them to us, since they are not needed and only guarantee us misery some time in the future?

If it was the CMOS battery the machine would boot and the VFD would say "Main Battery Low".  Sounds like something went wrong when you removed the battery.  Perhaps static electricity zapped something?  I'd double check to make sure all the socketed components are fully seated and that none of the pins on the MPU edge connectors got bent reinstalling it in the machine.  If all that is good, start looking for a new MPU board.

I tried the MPU from the other machine in this one, and got different feedback: the performance of the other machine's MPU was the same in this machine, with this power supply, as it had been in the other machine.

Are you saying the other MPU worked in this machine? But original is not working in other machine?

I guess it's new MPU time. Where are these available?

Well, this has been fun.
Never interrupt what is going well, no matter how gruff and authoritative the advice giver sounds.

stumbled all the way to  [7 KEY CHIP CONFIG]

I found some 2012 posts by Foster that seem to have left breadcrumbs this direction.
