Title: Bally 962 Pay Problem
Post by: big_e on October 15, 2019, 06:16:07 PM
Hey guys!

Working on an old Bally Model 962.  This is a 3 coin machine and I can say that everything works EXCEPT any of the 2, 5, or 10 coin payouts on any line.  Doesnt matter how many coins are played, these payouts do not work.  Every other payout is fine.
I have been through the reel mech, plugs, no loose wires nor anything bent.  Nothing obvious jumps out.  Considering looking at the step up disk, but I dont have much confidence that anything there could affect this.

Anyone have any ideas?  Its odd its just THOSE payouts....
Thanks in Advance!
E

here's what I'd generically do after just cleaning the reel wiper contact plates and payout disc:

1] got a schem?  If not, look in http://bingo.cdyn.com/slots/ (http://bingo.cdyn.com/slots/) for one

2] look at the payout disc diagram on the schem at the circuits for the pays that don't work.  e.g. 2-pay is wire 13, 5-pay is wire 15, etc.  Follow the wires to the reels and see if there's a common relay in the path.  On a 962-15 there isn't, so the goal is to determine why there's no complete circuit from wire 90 (or 91, 93 on this game depending on what line the symbol is on) thru the reels wipers to the trace on the payout disc.

3] with the units in the cabinet it's a hassle get to wires, so initially pick a payout that doesn't work and set the reels to that combination.  Yank the reel mech out and grab an ohmmeter.

for example, set up a single cherry center line win.  Pull the reel mech and connect the ohmeter to wires 90 and 13 on the reel mech plugs - see the plug charts on the schem to find those wires.  Got nearly zero ohms?  If yes, the circuit through the reel wipers is ok.  If not, likely have cruddy wipers<->contact plate connection, wipers that aren't on rivets properly or a busted wire on the plug.

4] if the reel mech circuit was good, yank the hopper and probe the hopper plug from wire 13 to wire 93-5 (the "feed" wire from the payout counter).    If not nearly zero ohms and the payout counter is reset, problem is wiring to the plug or the wiper<->trace connection on payout counter.

5] if both the reel mech and the hopper wiring seems ok with an ohmeter, either there is a poor connection that only shows up when current is flowing, you have an issue with the jones plugs connections or the wiring between the plugs inside the cabinet.

in your case, you've got the three pay lines and some pays don't work on any of them.  That makes it less likely the issue is on the reel wipers and more likely the problem is on the hopper or the wiring between the reel plugs and the hopper plugs in the cabinet.

Yes, check the reel wiper blade contacts. One or more may have been bent and not making contact with the wiper board. Usually the grey or grey red is the common wire located on the 3rd reel wiper board.
Hook one side of the meter to it. Winning combination will have continuity to a wire on the 1st reel wiper board. I believe the cherries have a red/white wire. Probably try a couple of known pays, then try the non-paying.
