Title: Bally 20 inch door/monitor
Post by: hemiroid on January 21, 2020, 12:12:44 AM
Can I remove the reels from a 'reel' cabinet and install a 20 inch monitor in it place?
What more do I need other than a door and monitor from a 20/20 cabinet?

I have a 1gig Alpha mpu...

I have never converted a reel to video cabinet, but I once tried to go the other way around.  These are the issues I found out, which basically made me just get a another reel machine.

1.  The amp board on the reel machine is connected to the reel controller backplane, so I'm guessing you would have to leave that there for the amp to get juice and signal.
2.  I couldn't mount the reel controller as I had no hardware, I suppose you could just remove it from the machine as I'm not sure if it would interfere with the monitor's depth in that area.
3.  There were other misc harnesses that were different, again, mostly requirements for the reels, so I think you would be OK going the other way around.

Thanks Rick...

I have read where peeps have gone from 'reels' to video but I haven't found the recipe to make it work. I normally am the guy that would get a video cabinet and call it good. My local vendors have been pretty stingy and as of late. Business is business, I get it. My budget says $1200 for old tech Alpha ain't gonna happen. I'm just looking for a temp solution till I can do some summer travel to where the vendors are not so greedy...

Once I source a video door I can report my issues. I'm kinda late to Alpha stuff. Seems like Alpha 2 is the 'thing' now...

I have a 1 gig engine and the video card on the way. I might use a computer monitor and fire it up to see if I get a melt down...

I changed out mine from reels to video some years ago. It was pretty straight forward replacing the door and removing most of the reels boards, I left the back board in the back of the cabinet using it for power and sound.
