Title: WMS BB2 Game Froze, Machine Re-booted, now nothing.
Post by: Ash100 on April 07, 2020, 06:08:50 PM
Ok, here it goes.

Noticed the other night that my machine just shut itself down and re-booted. Everything came back up fine and didn't do it again that I saw anyway. Weird thing a out it was only screens shut down, Emotive lighting didn't flicker like a power surge.

The next morning I hit the Spin button and nothing. Screen frozen, buttons lit, but unresponsive. I opened the main door, no alarm. Nothing on the inside of the machine looked out of place. All green lights on CPU and Backplane. Tried Diagnostic Button, no response. So I powered it down.

Turned it back on, machine booted and game loaded, then it shut right off. Pulled OS and Game Card, did a Clear, installed new Game and OS Card, never made it through the configuration. Screens went blank shortly after OLED Firmware validation. Everything else stayed powered up.

Turned off machine, tried it again, same scenario. Loaded game to HD, started configuration,  then both screens went blank.

Everything inside is powered up, BV, Printer, CPU lights etc. OLED deck stays dark though.

Not sure where to start. Video card, power supply, CPU?

Strange the way it's acting. Searched forum for similar situations, but didn't see anything quite like what I've got going on.

I have no other BB2's to scrounge parts from. I do have a TR BB1 with the BB2 CPU in it, so I may start there.

Looking for inputs.

Thanks, Curtis ash100

It is probably an mpu related issue. I suspect the adastra board or the video card has issues.  I would source another bb2 mpu and give it a go.  You need to have at least one spare (or if you are like me like 3 spares) to troubleshoot issues.  I would also clean out and change the thermal paste on the cpu heatsink to see if it makes a difference.  If not, then just go get a known working (or borrow) bb2 cpu, and if that works then you start swapping parts inside your cpu to figure what is the bad part.

Thanks Rick,

I've powered it on tonight and let it sit to see if it was still booting without video, but it's been 10 minutes and no alarm to let me know it's ready to configure. Plus OLED screens stayed dark.

It made it as far as the little x on the bottom monitor before blanking out.

I'll pull an MPU out of one of those Transmissive machines I just picked up and give it a try. I just put new heatsinks and fans in all of them, so they're good to go.

If the MPU fixes my problem,  I'll post a WTB ad for a couple so I have a good spare.

Check the caps, especially in the power supply. I don't have any idea about the hardware in these machines, but if they are PC-based I wouldn't be surprised if they have the cheapest possible junk (e.g. CapXon) in the power supply despite having top notch components everywhere else.

It was the CPU.

I swapped it out with one of my other machines and it's good to go again.

Now I'll start the process of troubleshooting it down to an individual component within the CPU.

Thanks for tur inputs!

Try the video card fist, it is usually the culprit, then the adastra board (the one where the cpu with the heatsink with fan is at).
