Title: What kind of metal is the face of the slot machine made of?
Post by: Grat on December 26, 2020, 07:41:36 AM
I'm trying to get quite a few scratches off around the button play area of the IGT S+ and I'm usually very good at tasks like this. I tried aggressive compound but they seem to be a bit deeper so I brought out 3000grit sand paper and the little area I was working on started to turn a goldish color. I have two thoughts, either its chrome plated and its really thin or the oil I'm using on the paper is reacting with the metal.

Any thoughts on the material type? I'm thinking the machine was built in early 90's if they used a different material then but can't confirm as it is missing its serial number badge.

The doors are chrome over copper.

I wonder why they used copper over something like steel or aluminum?
Did they make the new machines out of all the copper collected from penny slots?

They use copper for adhesion purposes.

chrome plating is usually a multi part process.  Certain metals only plate well to certain surfaces.  Copper will plate to almost anything and chrome plates very well to copper.  It is like using primer before you paint.
