Title: G20 booting slower than before
Post by: Wzrd0803 on July 16, 2021, 03:43:45 PM
My G20 is taking longer to boot than when I got it. What can I do to make it boot faster (besides cloning to an SSD, which I want to do eventually). I noticed that my nvram went up to 80%.  It was in the 70's before.  Is there a way to clear all error logs without having to reconfgure the machine? And, would that make the nvram lower and it boot faster?

Did you install more games?  That would do it.  The more games, the slower the machine takes to boot. Basically every time you add something to the machine, it is something else the system needs to verify when it boots.  The same goes for your NVRAM, as you install more games, the nvram utilization increases as it stores the additional configuration parameters and the game play history it needs to keep for that game.

Yeah I enabled more slot games. That's probably why.

What is the safest way to clone to an ssd?  I know there's a thread that says to use clonezilla to do it. I don't want to mess up my drive.  Make and boot with a usb stick of clonezilla so it's not doing it within Windows and do a drive to drive copy similar to Norton Ghost?

Will that work since it's not a windows partitioned drive?

I would disconnect my Windows hard drive first so it doesn't have a chance to boot to Windows at all just in case so it doesn't mess it up.

Since ssd's are faster booting, i'm hoping that would speed up the booting time so I don't have to disable some of the slot games.

One of these should work: https://ebay.us/xAooPi

Clone your drive without being connected to a computer, supports linux.

Honestly, the SSD is not going to make a significant difference in the boot time.  The bottleneck is not the I/O speed, but rather the slow process of validating everything.

I found switching from a spindle drive to a SSD cut my boot time in about half.  Used to take over 20 minutes for my machine to boot, now it's down to about 10 minutes.  When I cloned my original hard drive, I used the same docking station someone here mentioned above.  FYI, you can also purchase it from Amazon.
