Title: S9000 S9-1 won't boot Turn Attendant Key to Re-Boot message...
Post by: theWizardSlots on August 31, 2021, 06:41:33 AM
I have a Bally S9000 (S9-1 Mfg Date 12-10, S3--20) with the game card Bonus Times Pay.  I hope someone here that knows more than I do (probably anyone reading this post) can point me in the right direction. My machine has been good for years. But the last time I shut it down to move it from one room to another, after turning it on again it seems that it will not boot past the OS. I have reseated the power supplies, the board, the bill validator cash box but nothing changes the boot error.  So the boot has two non-boot routines.  1) It's  the "pre-boot" when the Linux command prompt is booting (see attached photo), and 2) it will get past the first, but on the top video display show Bally (tm) but the in red with white or yellow letters say the same message "Turn Attendant Key to Reboot".  So it's really just different stages of it not booting the game I guess. I bought a replacement set of CF cards from ebay, OS and the same game title but I'm sure there is more to that like BIOS version to make sure I have the right OS and matching game card.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

The error message says validation failed.  That is usually associated with a bad game card.

I doubt you have a bios mismatch.  Post a photo of your mpu's bios chip and OS card.

Try using your new game card and see if it boots up. Your new OS card is wrong, so use your old one.

If it helps, I found useful information in this thread that helped me figure out a cure for my Alpha S9000 boot problems and other issues.

The game card you bought is probably bad.  You definitely need OS version 33x and the corresponding clear.  Do you get the same validation error with the old game card as well?

Have the batteries on the MPU and backplane been changed?

I have never changed the batteries and I've had the machine for almost 6 years.  Also I'm not sure where the backplane is, unless you are referring to the board mounted to the back of the machine, but I don't see a battery anywhere.

6 years! Well it is time for sure.  Change out all of them for new ones.  You will have to clear and re-setup everything which is what we were trying to avoid.

There is a battery inside the MPU (the metal case that holds the memory, cpu, cf cards, etc).  You remove all cables and pull out the mpu and you will see a battery (CR2032) in a socket.  You need to replace that.  There's also a battery in the backplane (the one all the way back inside the cabinet).  When you pull the mpu out, you will see the battery holder (it is the type where you slide the battery out form one side).  It is located on the top portion of the the backplane that is normally hidden by the mpu.  Once you pull the MPU, you will see the silver battery holder.  Also a CR-2032 battery.

So I changed all (3) batteries two times, with new batteries each time.  Made sure the (+) side was facing up as it indicates this on the boards with a (+) showing etc.  Nothing changes.  I tried the game card I purchased from eBay, and the error it give I posted above. (http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=33543.msg177621#msg177621 (http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=33543.msg177621#msg177621))  Would it be worth it to purchase another OS CF card and and matching game card?  Where would be a good place to look?

Thanks in advacne!

Did you use the clear card to clear it before re-installing the OS?

Yes.  I used the clear card after the batteries were replaced.  I first replaced the batteries, then booted with the normal cards installed, still got same error.  So I used clear card and cleared the NVRAM and EPROM and then reinserted cards as normal but get the same exact boot problem.

You are getting validation errors, the gamecards are bad.  Whoever you bought it from, should be able to correct the problem.

The company I bought it from could only give me a credit for the amount i paid they didn't have a way to fix or replace the card with another one.

I'm pretty sure he does, he wouldn't get that far if he didn't. (Wouldn't get past the post screen).

You have a 3 reel stepper, was just asking because the card you bought from the guy is for a video only game (names that start with AVG, Alpha Video Game, are for M9000 or V20/20's which only have video screens, stepper games start with ASG Alpha Stepper Game. Stepper is what the reel machines are called since they use stepper motors for the reels).

This is probably what you need.  Spininc is reputable.

Yes - I actually thought I had them in the wrong Readers but I watched a video on how to do the clear and the video confirmed they were in the correct slots.
