Probably a really stupid newbie question but I did a search and didn’t really find a definitive answer so here goes……the payout % ……. Does higher % means it’s supposed to payout more?

Yes, it refers to the payback. So a machine set to 92%, pays back 92% of money that is played over "the life" of the machine. Since it is based on random play and subject to volatility, the actual payback during the short term will be wider on more volatile machines (machines with HUGE payouts) than on less volatile machine (machines with more modest payouts). For home use, the gameplay is really imperceptible though, it is really difficult, if not impossible, to tell what a machine is setup to payback by just playing it.
