Title: Idiot drags home a non working G23, it will not go past the splash screen
Post by: Mikey4026 on January 14, 2025, 07:47:58 PM
I know nothing about the AVP platform. I bought this machine in a package deal.  I get the blue splash screen on startup and it will go no further. There are no error messages displayed. Looking at the backplane LEDS, all of the voltages are there from the power supply (at least that is what the LEDS say). The backplane battery was replaced by the previous owner and checks at 3.8 volts. I removed the CPU (version 3.0 I believe?) and replaced all three batteries with new. I can plug a USB keyboard into the CPU and access the bios.
I attempted to look at the files on the SSD drive with an SATA drive USB adapter on my home computer, it goes unrecognized, does this mean it's dead? When I start the machine it does give one single beep and the RH red LED on the PCI flashes once.
I have an Ekey7 and have tried it the upper socket behind the little door and there is no paper on the door switch. I don not have a diagnostic key.
I have eyeballed all of the connectors everything seems plugged to be firmly plugged in.
Suggestions as to what else I can check would be appreciated.
Regards
Mike

You need to have a diag key...

If it boots with a diag key, it's working.  It's the only diagnostic tool for AVP's to test these things.  :)

Anytime you put a bootable usb diag key in, the system will always boot from it.   It sounds like the SSD is bad.

If I had to guess, if you plugged in a diag key with the ekey, the diag would come up fine.

But without the diag key you can't tell much.  You got a POST beep so that's good.  But you should clear NVRAM and Safe Storage with a diag key at minimum.  If it still doesn't go past the splash screen I would clear the drive as well with the diag and reload the OS.  If it doesn't load the OS, I'd put a new SSD in and clear everything, and load the OS.  If the OS loads, everything else should be ok after that, such as loading game files and such.

But given a new SSD is like $20, I wouldn't waste the time.  I would just put a new SSD in, clear everything, and load the OS.

Really doesn't take a lot of time, but you need to have the right files and tools to do it.

Thank you for for replying!
I'm going to have to do some more learning to understand how this machine works. I know my way around older machines but not the AVP. I will go through all of the pages on the AVP form, and see what I can learn.

Hit up RB.  He can sell you a Diagnostics and Ekey for your machine.

Thanks,
Jason

Thanks to Mr. Carlson, a multitude of problems were overcome and it is working again.
A new set of batteries, a diag key, a flakey  com port and setting everything up again.
Many thanks to you Mr. Carlson!

And a miswired or bad BV.   lol

Glad it's at least running though!

Now just a good working IGT flashed USB printer and BV and you'll have it all.
