Title: BB MPU door...on or off?
Post by: Yoeddy1 on October 25, 2015, 05:49:57 PM
Do you guys run your BB/BB2 MPUs with the door on or off?  Seems that the MPU would stay cooler with it off, but with the door on, it might reduce noise.  I ordered a door today just for the heck of it.

Thoughts?

Allegedly, the mpu box is designed with a specfic airflow model that  pulls hot air out the side while cooler air comes in from the opposite end.  The airflow thus moves across the entire mpu board cooling off the heatsink and moving away hot air out the side vent with the fan.  If the cover is removed, this airflow is disrupted generating more heat to the components due to the lack of air flow.

That being said, I had always ran my mpu's without doors, but I don't have them on 24/7 and my home is temperature controlled year round.  I have been recently putting covers on all my mpu's just to have that "genuine" look.

I would recommend keeping the MPU fans clean and run with the door.  The airflow is actually pretty important so you don't shorten the life of the cpu.

I have the door on now and it actually is around 3-4 degrees cooler with the door on per the processor diagnostics results.

Thanks,
Jason
