S2000 Fan in Top Box

Hello all,


Did a search on this and didn't find what I was looking for so thought I would just ask your opinions.  In a normal household setup is the fan in the top box of the S2000 needed.  I have 4 of these machines in my office and it does get a little loud, I like a little white noise but this is pretty annoying.  I know the machine I have that has the progressive in the top box probably needs it for the extra heat generated but in a normal S2000 is it necessary?

The fans are there to draw air from the bottom of the cabinet, where the real heat is generated, up and out the top. That being said, if you are only leaving the machines on a few hours a day you could probably get away with unplugging them. Some games, like reel touch and barcrest themes, use a second power supply in the top box and unplugging the fans wouldn't be recommended in those cases

I leave them on most of the time so I guess either I need to rethink how much I leave them on or get used to the sound or sell the pool table in the game room and move them all up stairs to the actual game room with the other 6.

S2000...mine is off.  Never had a problem.

This was extensively discussed in the old forum. I would get a thermometer that has a probe on the end and check the reading several hours of each. Then disconnect the fans and recheck the temperature. I would keep and eye on the settings when the fans are off. Another thing suggested from the old site is change the all lamps and buttons to LEDs.
 
Alpha's, reel touch and barcrest is another story.

I spent years working in a data center with fans running all the time.  My office at home is now starting to sound like those data centers.  Here is my current lineup, would love to have the Tabasco and GameKing in here but just no room.

If you want to get fancy you could run cooling duct on the bottom side of your stands and drill holes where the coin overflow chutes are and use one fan to push cool air from the bottom up through the top, thus elimi acting all current fans and still protecting the machines

I'd love to unplug the top fan....it is really loud. Its amazing how loud it is for a computer fan.  I know there is at least one person here that has theirs unplugged...has anyone else successfully run their fan unplugged?

An excessively noisy fan can sometimes be quieted some by cleaning the blades. Just a thought...

It seems like its more of the air hitting the case more so than the air over dirty blades.  But I will check just in case.

I've always left mine unplugged on all of my machines, never had an issue.  I've had many models, S Plus, S2000, Vision, and even a barcrest style AC Coin with huge 30" top box.  Even on my Vision machine, with more heat being generated in the top box from the LCD, not only did I disconnect the fan in the top box on that one, but the fan on the back of the LCD monitor as well.  Never had an issue.

I had a Top Box fan that made an annoying high humming noise.
I took a Philips Screw Driver & touched all four screws, not all at once.. One screw was making all the noise. I took a very small piece of felt and placed it between the fan and the top. It is now left on most of the time &  not annoying anyone.
It may or not work for you.

I appreciate the info...mine is more like air blowing noise than a rattle.  It's just loud when the room is quiet.  I tried unplugging the fan and then you can hear static from the speaker that might sound even worse.  So I keep the fan on...lol.  I saw some fixes for the static, but I don't think I'm going to start messing with the wiring yet.
