873 Hopper motor testing?
« on: October 09, 2016, 06:44:42 AM »

This is my first post. Please be gentle. I am VERY mechanically capable and know EM from reviving an old pinball machine. I have all the tools!

Bally 873a

3 reel

5 payout 25cents

I bought this machine from an old storage building and I need some guidance please

1.) began at the top and found everything in order except a fried b25-925 and some serious cleaning.
I have to order some parts to get the multicoin function working, so I am working on a single coin and have the top(upper) payout
disconnected. (pulled out at the plug)

2.) went thru the reels and they are function fine. I have all the switches(reel) in the correct order and working.
They had everything jerry rigged so I undid their misdoings. It now accepts a coin properly says coin accepted and spins.

3.)So down to the hopper

the hopper was frozen. I took the mechanical section (plate) apart and cleaned it. took the loose and it works freely.
The hopper now can spin freely with just using my fingers.

I am getting no payout from it...  seems electrical?  So I want to test the motor first... It looks good, but looks can be deceiving.

Is it 110 to the 2 lugs on it? don't want to just throw 110 on it and fry it...

I have read thru reno's stuff and don't see how to test the whole hopper outside of the machine.

Knowledge and assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx in advance

Quick question: There is a key switch on the arm side of the machine that contacts a microswitch. By chance is that a hopper

override to pull all the coins from the hopper?

I just jumpered to the payout relay from the coin door relay and it powered up and ran for 2 or 3 seconds...  didn't want to push it...

Where do I go from here?

Welcome to New Life Games..

The hopper motor on the Bally EM Slot machines are 110v. You can bench test it by using a test cord to the motors two leads. I have a test cord with clip on the ends so I can just clip on the leads to test motors. Alway test out of the machines. I have had gear boxes grease dry up. You could try a heat gun to warm up the gear boxes old grease. There are oil holes on the motor shaft bushing. There is a felt inside to hold oil.

The key switch is used to reset the machine after a large jackpot. If this switch has been disconnected, the machine can be reset by the coin in switch.

thank you I hooked up 110 to the Hopper and it worked perfect.

Just for others I hooked the 110 power (black) to the solid wire and the neutral(white) to the muttled wire.

Pluged it in and  away it went...

Checked all the switches and stepper functions all look good.

Ordered my B25-925 solenoid today to rebuild my top stepper. so hopefully by this weekend I'll be playing.

Thanx for the assistance
