They are pretty much all the same junk if they are under $10.00. the ones for $20. & $30. are somewhat better. the tip will last longer.

When I was still doing repairs for a living I tried solder suckers a few times and found they weren't really worth a crap com paired to just using a good desoldering braid

Depends on what price range your talking about, and what you are desoldering. If all your doing in replacing battery's those three dollar solder suckers you can find on Ebay will work, or like Cowboy said use solder braid.
 
If you have a air compressor in your shop I can tell you how to make a real good solder sucker for less than 20 bucks. ( but you must have a air compressor.)

we change many caps and batteries  each week  , repairing power supplies . really like those 100 buck ones from china , no air compresser here, but thanks for input

This one is from RadioShack. It has 45W power and a rubber bulb. Cheap and handy.

that's the one we have   the shack  is not going to restock those and here in va they don't carry them anymore and will not get anymore in

Same one I have as well.  Also have some of those straight cyl/plunger type with the plastic tips also (melt).  The rig Buzz is talking about is passing air over a orfice thus creating a vaccum.  I made some simular rigs back in my line tech automotive days. The squeeze bulb does work the best in my opinion.

Buzz.. Will a portable air tank work? It holds up to 100 psi. I think it's a 2 gallon tank. I'm getting tired of using the braid.

Gary  I don't know, I know it's not the pressure you have to worry about it's the volume of air that you need.  If all your doing is changing battery's one of those three dollar plunger type don't work all that bad. Here is a link to one of those bulbs from China, Five bucks and free shipping, how can you go wrong.  I'll bet your Wife has one of those bulbs she uses for cooking, don't tell her what your doing and give it a try. ( I would clean it up real good after you use it, she sees some solder come out on her Turkey she just may get all pissed off.)

I have one similar to that link. Never really liked it. I have the spring loaded plunger type with the plastic tip, but it never seems to get up everything. I still end up using the braid to finish. I've been thinking of just breaking down and buying something nice, but what? I don't want something that's half ass or can't buy replacement parts for, but I'm hoping not to have to spend $400-$500.

Let me check with the seller that gets me my tire patches and miss, BS and see if the he can still get a tube deflater.
 
I bought one of these about a month ago, boy you sure have to watch what your doing when using the Hot Air. Damn thing will desolder parts you didn't want to remove. I kind of like the little power supply, so for I've used it to test light bulbs, crank it up to 14 volts and test away  also makes it easy to figure out which is Pos and which is Neg on a LED bulb and takes the guess work out of which direction the install it.

There you go again! You caused me more money.   Been looking for this for low voltage tester, a very-able heat soldering station and a hot air soldering station. Did not know they made all together!
