92000 mains you can move the JW10 to do a clear. The newer 95000 96000 mains you need to use a clear chip.

That's good to know, will be an easier way to do it.

I'm curious why the mains are called "92000" or "95000" when the Bally label always shows it with another zero ("920000")? Just a shorthand name maybe, but if that's the case looks like you could just say "92" mains or "95" mains??

Sunrise- I understand that the mains chips are the U12 and U15 eproms.

The eproms U3 and U4 are usually also called part of the mains set but on the Bally schematics they are called the"Supplements" eproms, and that corresponds to how they are labeled with the"SE" at the beginning of their id number (SE920000). Any idea what the purpose of these U3 and U4 Supplement eproms are for? I'm thinking they may contain information specific to certain jurisdictions or machines or something. Do you know if all 92000 mains have identical 4 eproms, or possibly there are differences in the U3 and U4 eproms? For example, if you were to replace the 92000 mains with 95000 mains would you just change U12 and U15, or would you have to change all 4 of them? And are these different versions of mains just improvements made over time, or do you have to use certain mains with certain games?

I'm not an expert on these but have had worked on a dozen or so. Here is something from the old site posted by  "Buzz" .
For what it's worth U3, 4, 12, & 15 are the same chips on every Bally 5500. I guess what I'm trying to say is, when you do a game change U 18 and U 20 are the only chips that needs to be changed.

To do a clear using the jumper at JW 10 the mains ( U3, 4, 12,& 15 ) those mains must have a number of 92000 If you have 95000 you must use a clear chip. You may change the 95000 to 92000

Found this on old site also. If you have 95 or 96 mains and You need to do a complete safe ram clear after changing the battery 83F error. You will need the safe ram clear eproms (U12 &U15) to match your mains software.

Thanks for that info. Since he can do a complete clear by using the JW10 jumper and gets the message CH C that would seem to indicate that the clear procedure worked and that the unmarked mains he has in the mpu now are the 92000 mains.

Do you know why the 95000 and 96000 mains were released? Did they offer some features or improvements that the 92000 mains did not have? Since they require using special clear chips to do a clear that seems like a negative over the 92000 mains that used the jumper JW10 method.

EDIT Added:
Maybe the 95000 and 96000 mains are not for the S5500 machines, but are for the V5500, S6000 and newer machines? From what you read on the old site about every S5500 having the same 4 chips at U3, U4, U12, U15 then all S5500 would have the same mains, right?

The newer mains had more options which I do not know what all of them are. But one was tokenization was supported on the newer mains.  When you get to CHC keep pressing the buttons till it changes to CLC.  The four mains are  U3, U4, U12, U15. I dont think we know what mains he has in there now. That would help.

Well, I soldered a jumper a j12 and did a clear.
And she came alive. Seems to function correctly.
Don't understand how it worked before but not sure I care.
Thanks for all your help. Couldn't have done it without your direction.
Steve

I just got inside from mowing, weedeating and raking from about 3:00pm until 9:00pm so I am beat. While I was out there I kept thinking that maybe there would be a "it's working" report from you when I got back inside. So it's great to get the terrific news. Makes me feel good about the problem-solving time we spent on it. It was a puzzler for sure.

I don't think we should do a post-mortem on what may or may not have happened in the past. And don't feel down about it. You said you bought a bunch of machines at the same time, was probably working on several of them at the same time, going back and forth. If it was me doing all of that it would be entirely possible my memory on one particular machine could be fuzzy. Not saying that's what happened, just saying if it did it is understandable. The main thing is you got it working, all's well that ends well.

Good Job sticking with it!    :cool_thumb_up:

PS> Are you selling this machine like the others? Was it easy or hard to sell them? Curious about the slot machine market in your area.

This machine I am keeping. It's been in my game room for five years or so. Like I said a friend of mine bought a whole storage unit full of them, probably  50 of them. I bought a dozen at 75 bucks apiece. Which was a deal back then. At the time there was a store at the mall selling them like hotcakes for 1200 to $1800.
The ones I fixed I put on craigslist and got 500- 600 easy. Years later I ended up coming across 4 more and couldn't give them away for $300. I would say the market in the Northeast anyway is dead.  Probably cause they're building casinos everywhere now and people can just go play them there.  people just don't have the money for toys anymore.
Again thanks for all your help. I may start another topic about how to increase the pay out.  The casino in Puerto Rico didn't give good odds.

Here is some info to get you started on getting a higher payout percentage. From what I understand you would just need to change the 2 Personality eproms to do this. Keep in mind that the payout percentage is based on thousands of spins, so in the short run you may see little difference between your machine and one with a higher payout when it is only a few percentage points higher.

The Stars and Bars Personality eprom chipset you have is SMI# 7525, it has a payback percentage around 93% and it is a 3 coin max machine. There are other Stars and Bars chipsets with different payback percentages, yours is about in the middle. The one numbered SMI# 7526 has 95% payback and SMI# 7527 has 97% payback. Here is the link to the information, you can do a control-F Windows search on the page to find it, search for "7525" to get started. Notice there are Stars and Bars chipsets for 2 coin max as well as 3 coin max machines, so be careful to stay within the 3cm listing so your machine glass will match.

Thanks for your perspective on the used machine market, you make some good points about it. Glad I was able to help, the others here that made suggestions and had ideas also helped steer things to the solution, so like a lot of the happy endings here at NLG it was a combined effort.

EDIT: added photo of your machine, I brightened it a little so I could see some details.
