Hi People;

Just wondering, if anyone out there has mastered these great small machines that break, and quit paying out forever. So far I have found no one that has been able to fix this payout problem once it shows its ugly head. This one (see photo) had a fried resistor in line to the triac that is mounted on the payout coin hopper. I replaced the resistor and the special tric and got the machine working again, but like all of them I have seen that went south like this, it will not payout. These machines have a control box that has Clair switching units (telephone equipment) and I for one know nothing about this switching equipment.

LOL, those two stepping switches are worth more than the machine. You can still find them here and there but they cost $$$. The good news is, they're probably in good working order, and even if the coils burned out (they don't look it) they could be rewound. Those EM parts are easy to fix and I'd offer to do it for you, but you're too far away for a house call.

Interesting that these Clair switching unis are getting expensive, and yes I bet they are worth more them the machine I am sure unless this machine could be fixed... LOL. These are really neat machines being so small and still having everything. This is a customers machine and it has sentimental value to him. If he was willing to get it to you (sending or in person) as I see your in Las Vegas I guess, would you be willing to try to fix it for him? That would be an option for him at least. When I received it, the machine had a runaway hopper, so after looking at it I found the resistor on the wire going to the triac mounted on the hopper unit was fried. So I replaced that resistor and surface mount triac. After that the hopper quit running as it should, and the machine will coin up and play, but it will not payout. I would really like to get this fixed or find someone to refer him to, just to help this customer fix his machine, so anything would help us.
Thank You!

I would do it willingly, but it would be very expensive to ship the whole machine to Las Vegas and back. Here are a couple of things you could try.

Can you click the stepping units by hand - will they move or are they stuck? A stuck stepper is absolutely the reason for a runaway payout.

The black plastic wheel on top should have three cams that operate the switch spring set. Check that none of them are broken off. From your pic they look intact. There is an extra spring set on one of the units. Click by hand and make sure all the spring sets operate as the cams pass. Adjust as necessary. The extra spring set is probably a "carry" from the units stepper to the tens stepper and probably closes one step before the other set operates..

The switches will have a home position Probably (I'm just going from experience) if they're not homed, they will run automatically to the home position when the handle is pulled using the self-step contact (red circle) in series with a break contact on the spring set. The spring set operates at the home position and stops the switch running. Move them both off home and try this. If one homes and the other will not, clean the self step contact and the break spring set. Almost certainly, the win circuit is only enabled when both switches are at the home position. Move them both to the home position and try it.

The $50 jackpot is 200 quarters and it isn't clear to me how two steppers can count to 200, but possibly one of the relays serves as a 100s register. That too will have to be cleared to enable the win circuit so make sure none of the relays is stuck on (welded contact) and they are all secure in their sockets.

Hope this helps!

A follow-up on this.
I have the machine here in Vegas. I opened up the control box and set up a win. The hopper didn't run but when I manually clicked the coin out switch the stepper stepped and the win relay dropped out after the correct number of coins. That lead me to the ORIGINAL problem. The little coin rocker on the hopper was gummed up and didn't release the microswitch until I manually pushed it off. The stepper doesn't step until the switch releases. So the first coin out would operate the switch and then it would stay operated, and the stepper wouldn't step and so would never turn off the hopper.
I dismantled the hopper switch assembly and cleaned and oiled the coin rocker so that it moves freely. I applied power to the motor, and the motor runs, so it isn't burned out. But it doesn't run in the machine when I set up a win. So either that big triac is bad, or it isn't getting turned on. The investigation continues.

Problem solved! The hopper triac wasn't getting a turn-on signal because the tracks that were supposed to supply it were burned out on the relay board, no doubt from the overload that burned out the resistor and triac before. It's the tracks going to pins 11 and 32 from the payout relay. Replaced with wire links, and it's all ok now.

Op-Bell:
My God, so where is that board with the blown out tracers located at, the one with the burned out traces? I am so very happy you were able to fix this machine for these really nice people that wanted to save it. I guess the fact that I added a larger resistor would only blow them traces out faster...LOL. Op-Bell, Monti really wants to talk to you badly about these machines and I will give him the link here so expect to hear from him soon. These are really nice machines when working, but none of us has been able to figure them out and you so far, are the best! Would you allow me to refer people to you in this case? Thank you again for making my day, this is just so wonderful my friend!

Refer to your first photo at the top. The six relays are on the printed circuit board. The win relay is the bottom right in that pic and the burned tracks are under it and connected to it. I'm slightly pissed off that I had the board out first thing and even took a photo of it, but I completely missed seeing the blown track and didn't think of it until about two hours later when I was tracing the triac gate signal and found it open circuit.

I don't think the burned tracks are anything you did. You put in a 1k resistor and it's still good. What must have happened is the original triac burned out and shorted, and that burned out the original resistor and the tracks with it.
I won't have this machine long enough to make a full circuit diagram, but somebody should one day as these are fantastic little machines and deserve to be kept in service. By all means refer people to me.

Hello OP BELL!
I believe I may have spoke with you many years ago!
The Piggy Back Allstate that I had in my shop for about 6 months with the problem that I believe was one of the old phone switches on the back of the front door has long ago left my shop, the one Jackpot had mentioned, but I do have a Jennings Standard 400 series in my shop that I believe I have localized to the logic board as being the issue!
All traces have been checked for continuity and none are lifted or discolored as they would be if resistance heat had been the issue!
So no jumpers would correct the issue or so I believe, so an easy fix is not possible!
I will be talking to you about it shortly if in fact you are the same gentleman I had spoke to many years back on other issues, Pete, I believe and your phone number ended in 29!
I believe you also worked in Northern Nevada in the casino industry but I may be wrong!
Hope All Is Well With You!

WOW, what a great ending, I am so happy that you have her back up and running, before OP-Bell stepped in these great little barn burners didn't have much hope in ever seeing a good ending like this. Hip-Hip-Hooray for OP-Bell and Op-Bell if you reading this also: I see you and Monti got in touch, so there is another good thing.
