Knagl's guide for the 61 error code
« on: August 10, 2018, 05:26:47 AM »
I've gotten requests for this to be posted so we'll post it as a How To..........Shaggy
Copied from a post by knagl, edited slightly for this how-to guide.

On an IGT S+ machine, if the "Winner Paid" display shows a "61" in it after turning the machine on, this is a typical error code and usually can be cleared easily.

The normal procedure for clearing a 61 error is:

- Turn on the machine if it isn't already, and wait for the 61 code to appear in the Winner Paid display.

- Open the main door and press and hold the white self-test button located next to or behind the power switch* for up to five seconds.  The display should change from "61" to "61  1", and the speaker should ding if it is working.

*On a small number of very early S+ machines and on sone slant-top machines, the white self-test button may be located on the front of the MPU board enclosure, to the left of the hopper.

- Close and latch the front door (ensure that all other doors are closed first, too (cash can door, belly glass door)).

- Turn the jackpot reset keyswitch on the side of the machine (or the front of the machine, if it's a slant top) once, then release it.

The "61  1" should disappear, and the machine should do its "maiden spin" and be ready for play.  If not:

- If the "61  1" remains on the display, the machine is not sensing that the door is closed and will not let you finish the initialization procedure.  Likely causes in order from most likely to least likely: open bill validator stacker door switch (the door where the "cash can" goes in), bad main door optics, misaligned door optics, open belly glass door (only on the few machines that had a belly door switch installed).  You will not be able to get past the "61 1" screen until the machine detects the doors as being closed.  If your door optics are bad, that means they will need to be replaced with known good optics before you will be able to clear the "61 1" code. It is possible, although somewhat unlikely, that the jackpot reset keyswitch is not working correctly (wires disconnected or the like).  A non-functioning keyswitch would prevent the "61 1" error from clearing, as the machine must see the door as closed and then receive a signal from the jackpot reset keyswitch.

Special note for slant-top machines: most slant top machines have a door sensor for the belly door panel (the metal sheet that is installed near your knees if you're sitting in front of the machine). Make sure you have that belly door panel installed and properly latched in place when attempting to clear a 61 error. Also, the bill validator stacker box ("cash can") access door is also wired in-line with the door circuit. Ensure that door (if equipped with a bill validator) is closed and latched.

- If the "61  1" vanishes and "61" returns, you are in the "61 loop" and must use a RAM clear chip to resolve the issue.

- Once the 61 / 61 1 error has been cleared, you may encounter additional error codes.  Use the guide found at this link to determine what any additional error codes mean, and how to resolve them.
