Bally Alpha stepper, V20, and V20/20 power supply question
« on: October 04, 2014, 10:44:35 AM »
After chatting with Rick he mentioned that there are different 5v/12v power supplies that are used in different style machines.. I currently have 3 stepper Alphas, 2 are running the 3Y 5v(19Amp)/12v(19.2Amp) and another stepper that has the 5v(36Amp)/12v(15Amp). All machines power up fine and play fine.. Should I be worried about the differences in supplies? And which is the correct supply for the following machines..

Stepper Alpha?
V20?
V20/20 or GM?

We also both have GameMakers (V20/20), while his has both a 5v/12v and 24v supply, both my GameMakers only had a 24v supply with a OEM jumper on the 5v/12v molex plug (So my GM's have no 5v/12v, only a 24v)

I am really confused now.. :Scratch-Head:  Any input is appreciated.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, Rick.

The v-20/20 hd gamemaker alpha's -every one I ever seen or had -Had just the 24v pwr supply with the jumper on backplane board.  Rick's machine is a conversion and yes they work as well.  You don't need the 5/12v on a alpha gamemaker as it did not use any light ring action, boards etc. Pwr. is stepped down via the back plane and internal pwr supply receiver.  As far as diff. 5/12 volt power supplys there are diff. ones.  This was done for machines using more devices/loads.  They both work.  One has fans, one dosen't.  Guess when you get machines that have been jacked-with or frankened those questions will arise.

I have both types of 5/12 and both have fans. I just hope that doesn't cause probs with the machines down the road.. I do know its a no-no to power something and not have enough amperage..

Thanks Sizz

5/12-36 amp pwr supplies were used in alpha elites and prem. games-No fans in them.  The other has fans.  I was going to take pics but cam. has dead batteries for a min.  Also the alpha game maker with just one 24 in it has a jumper on that slot as well as on backplane if I did not state that correctly earlier.

Anybody got a good photo of the "jumper" so I can duplicate it?

Thanks for that info, narrows down what an S9 should have. All of my power supplies have different part numbers then the ones listed and put out either 325w on the 5/12v's or 300-360w on the 24v's. All AMP outputs are different as well.. I just hope that over time the supplies don't take dumps due to not having exactly what supply goes with what machine.

In the meantime I am going to try and bang my head on the wall until I can figure this out, or make a trip to the local psychic to see if she knows..  :banghead:     :magic:

Thanks Barry.  I can't make out where the wires are going though, the part number label tab gets in the way.  :duh:

Rick, This may help a little more. Also on the long connector/jumper block the 5th pin holes stay open. those wires just jump across for a set of 8 total jumper wires, You can see orientation from the front face of the connector and the way they are plugged in on the machine.  The smaller one is just a 2 wire jumper that goes on backplane.

plugs into the newer style light controller board which on alpha 1's mounts left of reels. The newer one has more ports on it to hook things up.

Not sure if I have any left.  Can look t'mrow.  Also this board allows for other hook ups such as viedo topper with super candle etc.  Most the viedo toppers have side lighting or a ring around them, This board is needed for these, Just a newer board that can adapt to alpha 1.  Also used for light control on lwr monitor for reels be it regular or transmissive i-reels etc. That is why there are more ports on them for the expansion of added devices.

Hmm, the board on my gamemaker is missing that big connector where the 6 pin connector goes.  None of my other Alpha's have that connector, but a spare backplane I purchased has it.  It even has the jumper installed.  I'll just need to make up that other jumper and give it a try, if anything I will gain a spare 5/12v power supply.
