Summit slot machine working improperly
« on: January 14, 2015, 05:26:25 PM »
Hi! I have an old Bally that was converted by summit, it's in pretty good shape both internally and externally. However, there's a couple problems I've been having and I was hoping I could get some direction from some people who know. First off, the little unimax switch on the hopper is broken off. One of the two problems is when it hits any jackpot, no matter how big or how small, it pays 29 coins. I'm not sure if that will be corrected when I find another one of those switches to install on the hopper, but I'm thinking that could be part of the problem. The other problem, is that when you play it and hit a jackpot and it gets thru with paying, the winner paid light stays on and the machine doesn't reset, and it doesn't even have the pay out number reading out on the display. I have to reach in and turn the machine off for 10 seconds to reset it in order to play it again. Any insight on how to cure these problems? Thanks in advance!

Please post some pics of the inside. Fix the switch. Take the reel assy out and on the back side clean the male  elec  pins  on the beau plugs with a small wire brush. Reseat the the boards on the front side of the rell assy. Lube all the mechanical linkage with WD-40 or LPS 1.

The switch you broke on the hopper looks like a common cherry switch used to control your coin diverter on the front door. They have three connections, common, and normally open (no) and normally closed (nc).. They are available at and electronics store, Radio Shack.. You should make sure the one taped wire doesn't ground our with that metal contact piece still attached. Have you checked your fuses to make sure one don't blow when that broke?

The switch was actually broken before I got the machine, the fuses are all still intact. I've pulled the boards out and made sure the contacts were clean also. I'm gonna try to replace that switch soon here and see what happens. Does that switch have anything to do with proper payout when you hit certain jackpots? The machine payed out properly one time and then it never did it again, it was really random that it even happened. Any jackpot pays 29 coins every time

No that switch shouldn't have any thing to do with your payouts.. It controls the coin diverter on the front door. When the hopper get full that switch closes. Then the coins in should go down the second chute and down into the slots stand where a bucket would be. It sounds like you have a grounded wire or a problem with the reels optics or some other board..

Here's a good place for Summit info. I copied this from the other thread. CV Slots - Roz provided this. HMS Electronics out of Rohnert Park, CA.

HMS does a board repair/replacement program. You basically tell him what game you have (or give a pic) and send in your board, and he sends you a working board for the game. Summits are odd ducks. You're just not gonna find a ton of info on fixes anywhere on them. The boards go bad, period. HMS has some history with these machines (seems like he worked for Summit at one point, if I remember correctly), and can troubleshoot over the phone as well. Like noted, he is not free. He puts a value to his time and charges accordingly. Knowledge is value, so he is 100% justified in his charges, at least in my opinion.

Yeah that website really has a lot of useful information, it was one of the first things I found after I got the machine. That's probably what will end up happening, I'll send him the boards and see if they're in 100% working order or not. Has to just be a connection or something, cause like I said it played normal one time! Lol but other than that it hasn't

Ok this is probably a really stupid question, but how do I pull the reel mechanism out? It doesn't seem to move after I unlock the latches

Did you unhook the wiring connector. Mine is so snug that you have to unplug it first then the latches and it will slide out. I also had to undo the door slide to open it wider as the door was catching on the side of the reels.

I'll have to try that. It should just slide out without having to disconnect any of the linkage or other part of the mechanisms right?

I'm sure yours is different than mine. But after unhooking the harness mine slide right out. They're usually modular so kind of a self contained unit.

But after looking at the pics again, mine is way older than yours. I don't have that plate in front of mine. Good luck.

It looks like the 2 screws on the lower top and the 2 on the bottom of that frame may need to come out to remove the reel assembly. I can't really tell from the pictures. The 3 sets of double screws look to hold the reel assembly alignment. BTW nice looking machine. Lot nicer than mine.

I have an almost identical machine and had multiple problems with it, fixed them all. I can test your CPU and IO board if you send it my way, on my machine. Mine's a five coin, three reel machine from the Paradise Casino.

On the hopper, pull the two latches down and tug...there are two BEAU connectors on the back that have to disengage. I have had a ton of problems with those connectors, which is the main cause of most of my issues. The machine works 100% now.

Learned an awful lot with owning this machine and I can help.

Here's a view of the reel assembly showing the connectors:

As ramegoom mentioned , those connectors are most problematic. Use a wire brush on them and for the female part of the plug get yourself from the auto parts store a very small points  file that is used to clean the points on an OLD car igntion distributor. you grind down the width of the file to the width of those male connectors on the reel. then use this file to insert into the female plug connections inside the cabinet where the reel assy plugs into. this file will remove the oxidation in the female connectors.
