combination 809 - 1090 - HELP
« on: November 20, 2015, 08:41:37 AM »
Picked up the machine back in August, just getting around to working on it. No tag (of course) was identified by others here as a combination of an 809 and 1090. In process or lubricating the handle mechanism, which is gummed up. I have the book Bally Slot Machine the complete service manual EM 64-80. On page 108 under handle mechanism assembly. It says #1. Oil hole in handle shaft bearing (left). Where is the hole? Do I need to dis-assembly the mechanism to find it? Help appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry don't have that book.  Is it in the bally EM manual?
Otherwise, I'd oil pretty much anything I could get to in a handle mech.....

Attached is a photo of the manual. It's just a compilation of material from various Bally manuals and is published by Liberty Belle publishing. If you have Bally manuals you probably have the same information. Can be bought on ebay. I just want to know if someone knows where the oil hole for the handle is that it references, because I can not find it.

I've rebuilt and relubed hundreds of handle boxes, but cannot recall any oil hole for bearing.  You may be talking about the needle bearing, which takes a lot of pressure.  I just used to oil the thing, work it all around, and then cover the needles with a good layer of grease to keep the oil in.
If your handle box is sticking, just try to oil every bearing point that you can get to, and work the oil in.  That should free up the mechanism eventually.  Or, if you prefer you can take it apart.
If you can find the oil hole, let me know.

Correction -- if you look at the left most plate of your handle box, where the shaft comes through and the bolt holds the split fork which kicks the reels off, you will see a thick bushing there which also has your nyliner attached.  If you look carefully at the very TOP of the bushing you MAY see a hole.  Yes, if you do have one, you can drip some oil into that and it will help lubricate your nyliner.  However, generally those holes are plugged up with grease so you can't get oil into them.  Also, if your handle mech is so sticky that it won't pull, just oiling that hole won't help out too much.  You need to, in that case, get an oiler with an extened spout, and oil ALL pivot points on the outside of the mech and all that you can get to on the inside of the mech.  That should help freeing up those sticking parts.

Hey Reno,
Handle on my machine isn't froze up, just a little jerky at times. I oiled all pivot points and it works more smoothly. Just out so I know. How much work and time is involved in tearing apart and rebuilding the handle box?

Bally Bob,
I think my record for swapping out a handle mech was under 10 minutes.  But, that was with a new rebuilt mech ready to pop in, and no interference, and all the tools right at hand.
First timers will take probably half an hour, which ain't bad.  You have to remove the large handle bolt through the hub, remove the 2 phillips screws at the back rear of the pan (to the right of your beau plug for the reel mech -- these hold the pan and rail to the back plug bracket) then there are two screws under the pan that hold an angle bracket which holds the pan up next to the handle (directly under pan and screwed through into the handle box), then you have 6 nuts that hold the handle box onto the case.  Then you twist on the handle ball and pull out and up on the handle shaft itself, remove the handle hub (outside), and then your handle box should come out.  You need to push down slightly on the pan to get it free and out.after you remove the rail assembly that the reel mech slides into, and then finally the box is free to come out.
After that, you COULD break apart the box, however, unless you want to replace worn parts, I suggest you just lube it without tearing it down.
If you do want to tear it down, you will need to make sure you don't lose any of the e-clips, as they tend to fly off and disappear.  You also need to pick up a tool which will allow you to remove the C-clip which will allow you to remove parts and access the needle bearings.
Ummmm. I recommend just pull the handle box, and then lube it well from as many points as you can, both poking your extendo-oiler into the inside, and also oiling well ALL points where parts stick through the plates.
With all replacement parts, oil, grease, and tools available, you could probably tear down, clean, and rebuild the mech (replacing worn parts) in an hour or so.  I don't remember because I would usually rebuild a whole machine in an 8 hour day.  And occasionally do floor work too and chase cocktail waitresses (mostly but not always unsuccessfully).

Reno I bet that you had a better success rate that you are admitting to.  Now you just press a button on the slot machine and order your drinks.  More time wagering for the casino.  Soon you will be able to to go to the bathroom right on your stool while you play.  Remember you heard it here first.

Happy Thanksgiving all

Ra, I hate to tell ya, but people already DO go to the bathroom while they are playing.
Pretty disgusting, the seats are pretty much ruined after that.
So glad I'm out of the industry.
