People want to blame someone or something else, instead of blaming themselves and taking responsibility for their actions and the choices they make. Lawyers help them do that, and with a jury made up of similar people as the "victim" there is sympathy so they often have a good chance of winning the lawsuit. Enough of a chance that a lawyer will take the case on a contingent basis, then get paid from the settlement if he wins.
