Gamemaker HD usb config error?
« on: July 27, 2018, 12:15:35 PM »
Hi guys, I'm trying to get a gamemaker hd v20/20 up and running but I seem to be having a problem with the button configuration. I believe I have everything hooked up correctly ( gadget board, harness, usb cable, buttons, etc. ) I even have new gamesman 920 multidirectional buttons installed but the game is throwing a "usb config error - connect all usb cables and reboot" and disables the machine. During boot up the buttons do flash in sequence and the gadget board is double flashing green. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Yes, one button does show 888. The other button does not, the lights flash but nothing is displayed in the text window.

That button switch is most likely bad then.  I had a similar issue with my machine a couple of years ago.  The good news is there is only two chips on the board, the bad news is they're both surface mount components.  If you have the tools, replace both chips and you'll be up and running.  If not, look for a new button, but they're not always that easy to find.

Thanks for the reply. I swapped the 2 multidirectional buttons but the problem did not follow the button. After the swap the button that wasn't displaying text is now working properly and the other isn't so I guess both buttons are good and the problem is probably with the harness itself. I searched and searched for a complete gamemaker button deck but never could find one so for over 2 years now I've been trying to piece together the individual button panel components by picking up what I could when I found it. The gamesman 920 buttons I have are new and after a long wait were recently available to order. The harness on the other hand came from a older cinevision and wasn't in the best shape to begin with so it doesn't surprise me to learn it has a problem. When I originally got the harness I found one broken wire which I fixed, at least I think it was broken, it might have supposed to have been that way, I'm not sure. I've looked over the rest of the harness closely but I can't find any other obvious problems. I wonder how long it will take to find another harness? Unfortunately it's beginning to seem like I'll never get this working..

After checking all the wires in the button harness with a ohm meter I am confident that it is 100% ok and it is not the problem. I also tried using a different gaget board but that did not change anything. As I mentioned earlier the multidirectional buttons are new and both good but I still only get 1 buttons display working. I've noticed that the small boards for these buttons have a single jumper on them and currently both jumpers are engaged. Should one of them be flagged? Or possibly both?

Ok, sounds like your buttons are good then.  They are hard to find.

I think the jumpers may be your problem now.  On my machine the far left end button doesn't have a jumper installed, the right one does.  Try setting it up like that and hopefully you'll be in business.

Success! It was the jumpers, I did it the way you suggested and now everything is working. Now I just need to find a button deck frame so I can have something to mount the buttons in. Currently they are just strung along the wiring harness. If I can't find one I guess I'll try to modify a standard 14 button deck frame to work. That's the last hurdle I'll have to jump but at least I know everything actually works now and I thank you very much for your help.

Outstanding!  Glad you were able to get it up and running.  I may be able to help you out with the button deck.  I have one, it has some scratches on it, but is better than nothing.  I'll post a pic of it in your classified ad.
