Bally Alpha M9000 MPU lockup

Having trouble with one of my Alpha M9000s.  The machine will function normally for a few hours, and then it seems to lockup.  The buttons do not function, touchscreen does not function, door opening does not generate the normal tone.  Pressing the reset button on the MPU has no effect.  If I turn the machine off for a while it seems to correct for a while, then back to lockup. Anyone familiar with this problem?

Could be an overheating issue on the chipsets.  Try removing the various heatsinks and re-applying thermal paste to see if that fixes it.  If not, you could have some issues with your mpu components that as heat is generated and expands some components, they are causing connectivity issues.  If that's the case, it's probably worth just getting another MPU, they are inexpensive enough where trying to find the issue with the original one is not worth the while.

I would also check all the fans in your cabinet...
The power supply fan might be a solid ball of dust.
If you can't see light through the cabinet fan grills they are not doing their job.
There are 2 fans in your MPU cage and one or two in the power supply in that cage...

Thank you for the replies.  It seems today the failure mode has changed.  Now when I try to power up, the display briefly shows "No Signal", and then nothing after that.  Sounds like I'm ready for a new MPU.  Any suggestions on what specific version I need and how to go about sourcing it?

Digging into this a little further.  I pulled the MPU from the rack and applied power.  The two MPU fans spin fine and very clean.  There is another fan on the MPU power supply; this one is clean, but when I applied power it spun for a second then stopped. 


I then removed the power supply from the MPU.  The label says I should be getting a combination of DC output voltages included 3.3VDC, 5VDC, 5Vsb,and +/-12VDC.  When I applied 120V power, I measure 5VDC on one of the cables, and about 3VDC on another one.  Nothing else.


Does this now look like just a bad power supply on the MPU?  Can that be purchased as a separate piece or is it better to just get the entire MPU replaced?

You can purchase the power supply for the CPU.  You can also open the power supply and look for bulging caps and replace them.  I have fixed several power supplies by doing that.

I found a pinout diagram for the power supply connector.  Also an interesting bit of information, if you want to test the unit as stand alone, you need to short pins 16 and 17; otherwise only standby voltage is present.


I stuck a paper clip between pins 16 and 17 and fired up the power supply.  Now it appears to produce all of the correct voltages at the output connector, but the cooling fan on the PS does not run.  This fan is labeled as 12V, but I'm only getting 3.3V when measured directly at the fan.  By the way, 3.3V is one of the voltages generated by the unit.


Also, only one of the two fans on the MPU spin; in earlier post I thought they were both working, but maybe I was just seeing things.  These are both 12V fans with plugs going to the MPU board.  If I switch the plugs, the opposite fan works.  Looks like there is a voltage supply problem on the MPU.


So I'm ready for more advice.  option 1: keep fiddling with this power supply and see if I can get the fan working.  option 2) buy a new power supply (my model number is YM-6221A).  option 3) purchase another MPU with a power supply on it (no idea what version MPU I have).

I think I'm heading down the path of a replacement MPU with a power supply on it.  Is there information I need from my old one in order to make sure I get the right one?   Does my OS version matter?  Memory size?  Processor speed? RAM clear disc? etc.

Unless someone makes a better suggestion [Scott] pbwizard has a good deal on some 1gb CPU boxes.

You might have to source the correct OS for the BIOS you get but it should work good and upgrade you to 1gb.
You probably could easily find a direct replacement for what you have too...
