S2000 strange cold start issue
« on: September 29, 2023, 06:13:32 PM »
Thanks in advance for any ideas on this.

I have a S2000(my personal machine) that has been giving me fits, it will not read my Tito and/or recognize the printer until the machine it warms up.

I have been slowly chasing this issue for months, first thing I noticed was the Tito would not respond to credits added or recognize a ticket printed, I thought the Tito was bad, but after swapping Titos the problem was still there, then after working on it for hours it would suddenly start working out of the blue. Now I see that at the same time the Tito stops working the printer is not available either, then somewhere between 30-60 minutes of the game being on it all starts to work perfectly without doing anything until I shut the machine down. Next time I power it up, same issue all over again.

Here is what I have done so far to no avail.
1-Swapped with a known working Tito
2-Checked and re checked the plugs on the backplane as well as the ribbon cable from the power distribution box
3-Replaced the ribbon cable and the power distribution box with a know working unit, verified voltage.
4-Replaced the backplane board with a know working board
5-Spent days checking and verifying programming early on thinking I missed something, there. Definitely nothing wrong there as it does work as it should after it warms up.
6-Upgraded the bill acceptor MEI Cashflow, unlikely that has anything to do with it, this was happening before the upgrade.

Not sure what to try next, replace the board? It is a 502 RevA with the 76924401 RevA audio board, running double diamond deluxe SB100088.

Thanks again for any advise.

I would check the power supply and if OK swap the MPU board and see if that corrects the issue.

I replaced the power distribution box already and tested for correct voltage there. Is there another place to test?

I don't have another board handy, but was going to upgrade to a 504 when I find one, guess I can wait for that, eventually I will have swapped the whole inside...lol

I'm talking about the +13 and + 25VDC power supply located behind the reels. You can check the voltage where it plugs into the motherboard.  +13V is solid red wire +25 is solid orange.

Well, you are right as it seems that's the issue, thank you for dumbing it down for me. I get 8.4V(Red) and 18.8V(Orange) DC at the back plane plug. Ive ordered a replacement.

Thank you for your input and please excuse my ignorance :duh: on proper voltage settings. Seems weird that the game plays perfectly with such low voltage, other than no Tito or Printer available of course ?

I'm surprised it works at all with output voltages that low too.  That should take care of it.
