Version eprom crc error -0xF002

Hello,
Just picked up this s2000
96438300 5x pay gold.
Giving version eprom crc error -0xF002. 
Made sure all chips are seated.  Bad chip?  Which one would that be?

Bad or installed incorrectly.  It's the version chip on the MPU board.  It should be labeled VSXXXXXX  and is installed in a socket labeled u44.

If it doesn't have a bent pin or something like and reseating it doesn't help contact member RB here and he can get you a replacement.

Machine is at my buddy’s house.  Odd. Chip is not installed in the u44 location.  He found the vs011gx1 chip on floor of the machine with bent and missing pins.

Well that mystery is solved.  That chip belongs in U44, but you'll need to get a replacement since it broken pins.  Contact member RB and get a new one.  Install it the U44 socket paying attention to the notch on the IC and socket and you should be good to go.

While we are in there. Which board is this? Can we remove  the varta battery? Per some other posts I was reading, depended if it was a 500 series or an enhanced?

You have a 504 REV B board. Yes. Remove the VARTA and you should also remove U79. (The 8 pin chip near the VARTA.)
