okay...now you see why I don't like that exposed circuit board on the back on these displays!
It's possible an IC component shorted out somewhere on it....I've had that happen once.

Better order a spare display panel....if it doesn't solve the problem, you could always sell it to another member that needs one?

Ok, I'll order one. The green wire has good continuity from the big white molex to the black one to the board, also continuity to the chassis.
I also ordered the BV set and RAM clear chips

Ok, I don't know if this is progress or not. I received my clear and set chips today, and following the FAQ, performed the clear procedure.

Still no display, but when I push the self test button twice, the machine dings each time, and it hasn't made sound before. With no display, I can't see when it gets to 2999, so I waited 30 seconds, to be sure, and powered it off.

Putting the game prom back in gets me back to where I started, no sound, no reel movement (other than them locking in the positions they are in) and still no display. When I get my new display, hopefully it will show what errors are on this machine.

(yes, I made double sure the chips were put in with the notches lined up on the chip and socket)

Is there any other tests I can do while I'm waiting on the display to arrive?

I'd hang loose and wait for the display and then hopefully you'll be able to "see" what the machine is telling you.

That seems like all I really can do at this point. Hopefully it was just a bad display, and the new one will show me some useful info.

Well, unfortunately the new display doesn't show anything either, so it looks like there is still more to this. I'm guessing this might mean one of the boards is bad? What's my next step?

That's disappointing.  You've already replaced all the major components that could be the cause.  MPU, motherboard, and display.  Only thing left is the wiring between them all.  PM me an email address and I'll send you some wiring diagrams so you can check for continuity between the display and the motherboard.

Ok, The only thing I can think is maybe the MB and MPU were not good to begin with. They were both replaced before I had it, could be possible they were replaced with defective units.

Ok, it looks like it can only be the motherboard or MPU at this point. I tested the wiring from the display all the way to the black MB connectors, and have continuity on all wires. It looks like my next step will be sending the boards off to be tested by another member. If there is anything I could check before then, please let me know.
Being I don't know the history of the boards, or whether they were tested before being installed (they were swapped by the previous owner) one or both could be bad.

Ok, I received my repaired boards back from Jim (thanks Jim!) and now I have some more life out of this machine, but still not 100%

My display is now working, and was initially showing 65-3 and 65-2. I was able to clear those errors with instructions online, and now after turning the game on, the insert coin light flashes, the coins in shows 1, followed by the reels moving a few inches, then error 43.

Opening and closing the door clears this, but then it comes back. Inserting any coins just results in them falling back out the reject slot.

Door is closed during the tests, except opening it to reset something.

So, looks like an error with the reels?

Yes, the machine thinks there is something wrong with reel #3.  First make sure the reel basket isn't rubbing on a wire or the back of the LED display.  If it's not rubbing on anything swap it with another reel and see if the problem follows the reel or stays the same.

Ok, it stays the same when swapping reels 2-3, so I guess that means it's something with the wiring?

It would appear so.  The wiring and the motherboard is all that's left between the tested mpu and the reel.

I did test the motherboard and cpu board as a set, never had any reel tilts.  I would suspect the harness cable??

That's good, yeah that's the only thing left then.  Maybe a pin backed out of the connector?  I've seen that before.

There are also the 5 resistors on the corner of the board.
They correspond to each reel.
4 & 5 will be in pristine condition and 1,2,3 will show some scortching.
You can use a meter to check each of the resistors. If 3 is bad then replace it with one from 4 or 5.
If you can't afford to lose you can't afford to win.
