Awful noise and reels not spinning
« on: February 04, 2016, 02:14:40 AM »
Hello all. I have a Triple Diamond machine that has been sitting for awhile (just under a year) haven't had a chance to work on it until today with a move and all.
Anyway, I installed new battery on MPU did a clear then reinstalled game chip cleared 61 ect.. machine went through it's test fine reels spinning and all, so I went ahead and did set chip that went ok. Re-installed game prom placed back in machine, turned it on and had a awful sound coming out of it. I shut down right away.
Checked connections ect..., tried again, same result. Tried disconnecting DBV, same. No hopper in machine, so that wasn't it. Removed reels, turned on sound gone. Ok so I replaced reels one at a time
1st small noise,
2nd noise that I previously heard,
3rd no difference. Still no spin, loud noise, and no display.
I am gonna try another set of reels to see if that may be problem.
My question is, could power supply cause this, or does anyone have any other ideas as to what the problem may be?

Can you tell if the awful noise is electrical, like a whine or hiss from an electrical part,
or
is the noise a mechanical sound, like scrapping or rubbing of metal parts?

If you inspect the machine and main circuit boards and don't see any burned parts, or smell an electrical burnt smell then it may be safe to leave the machine on long enough with the door open to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. From your description it seems that the 2nd reel may be the area to check first from what you have found so far. With power off do the reels spin easily? Take a closer look at the 2nd reel circuit board and motor that are mounted in the reel assembly. You can move the 2nd reel to the 3rd reel position and see if the loud sound continues, that will point toward that reel being the problem. Your idea of trying another set of reels is a good way to determine if one of the reels is causing the problem.

1st reel i would say more of an electrical type whine seems to me anyway. 2nd gets so loud sort of hard to tell. reels seem to spin as normal w/ or w/o power. If it warms up today I'll go take a closer look at what u suggested, and try different reels
thx

When a reel is spinning there is a normal motor whine noise, it shouldn't be too loud and it will be lower when the door is closed. As you look at it more and try different reels you will see/hear what is normal and what is louder than it should be. Make sure the spinning reel isn't rubbing on a nearby cable beside or behind the reel. It could be that one of the reels stepper motor is making the sound.

Something you could try ...

Take the squeaky reel out and place the motor side down on a stable flat surface and make sure the side of the reel is off of the flat surface. Take a small socket and place over the motor shaft and give it a couple of smacks but don't smack it so hard that it breaks the reel. That should tighten the compression ring on the motor shaft.

I was finally able to test further, inspected connectors, made sure they were tight. all looked good.
Tried reel swap, no change.
Tried MPU swap...BINGO!!
Another MPU installed it was quiet.
Swapped out transformer on try just to check, not it.
Appears I need another MPU.
Thanks for suggestions all

So the mpu was making the noise, or it was causing one of the reels to be noisy?   :Scratch-Head:

Is there any chance you had a 16mhz SP chip in a 10mhz board, or vice-versa?  That will cause weird reel issues.

Ok received new board today, but.. it's a 16mhz board, so now I need to replace the SP chip.
I generally use a 1271 on my S+'s 10mhz this way I can remove CC and hopper.
My question is, what 16mhz chip would allow me the same settings as the 1271? 1272? or 1309 maybe?
Thx

I don't recall if there was a reason that I preferred the 1309 over the 1272.

If you need a 1309 ... $18 includes shipping.

Unfortunately I had purchased a 1309 before reading this post. The 1309 seems more readily available, so I will start with that, and hopefully it'll be what I need.
My ultimate goal is to rid my machines the need of money to operate. I have many and if something comes up, I would be able to show machines for entertainment only, while if I choose to sell, I can restore it to its original state. ( don't want to be accused of trying to run a casino lol) The S+s are the last ones to achieve this goal, just have to sort out wiring for SAS to allow EFT. Have some oddball machines I may not fuss with though, as I need to get them operating properly anyway.
