Error Code 21
« on: January 06, 2021, 01:09:18 PM »
I keep clearing the code and it flashes a 30 on the right side and then 21 appears and the 30 disappears.  It is a quarter machine and the coins just keep dropping thru.I do not see any jams nor feel any but have not taken a hammer to it yet  hahaha   the machine has sat for a couple years.  Would like to get it going again for the 93 yr old mother during this covid.  thx for any help

The 21 is a coin in optics error. It's below the coin comparitor. Looks like this.

There is probably another way to work around it but not something I've done.

That's not the part that gives an error code 21. The coin in optics is below it.

The black plastic guide that goes between the two boards....it should have a rounded diagonal curved guide for quarters or even smaller coins....

I need to see those "encoders" guides and see if they are the correct ones for the coins you're using.
Are you using quarters or quarter-like sized tokens?

Put it this way, if you're using nickels and have quarter sized or larger encoders, then the nickels will miss the optical eyes many times....(see photo below)
The correctly sized encoder guides the coin in between the optical eyes to register a credit....if so, then the coin drops into the hopper or the drop hole.

Also, that particular optics boards you have are really really old...

I can tell by the off-light blue optics on those boards...Ken has the newer ones.

The optical eyes are infrared diodes...sort of like a LED or a lamp/bulb.....they do NOT last forever.

If one of them is burned out, it will NOT register anything as a credit.

Also, does the error code [21] pop up after you attempt to pass a coin thru it or does it come up after the [30] goes away?
What happens first?

Busting off the Q2 chip off one of the optic boards MIGHT help a coin get registered as a credit (Again, see photo below)
I would be asking Ken to mail you a new set of optics to be on the safe side.

Click on photo below to enlarge if needed...>>>

It is a quarter machine. the 30 code flashes to the right hand Side and disappears , then the 21 code appears and stays lit on the left side..

okay...the encoder I pictured was for a large token or something about the size of a half-dollar .50 cent piece.
You may notice it does NOT have the curved guide inside as in the photo below.

There ARE tests you can perform to check the operation of the coin-in optics.

There's flip-cards you can download in the S+ forum.

But there's something that you can easily do before that.

Take a small Philips screwdriver, turn the potentionmeter dial fully CCW on the coin comparitor.

After that, turn it CW 1/4 turn then close the door and drop a quarter thru it.

Let me know what happens and also which coin guide encoder you have.

If you have the large coin optic encoder guide, the quarter can still miss one of the optic eyes and still not register credits and shoot out a [21] error code.

What happens is the coin misses the 2nd "B" hole in a set of "ABC" optics.
