Mike Rowe's I Am a Factory
« on: February 10, 2014, 03:03:53 PM »
Mike Rowe Narrates Surprisingly Powerful Wal-Mart Commercial 2014
Mike Rowe of Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs” fame responded on Facebook Monday to public criticism over his narration of a new Walmart commercial advocating a $250 billion campaign to create manufacturing jobs in the U.S.

“Last night during the Olympics, a commercial started running called “I Am a Factory.”

It’s part of a larger campaign sponsored by Walmart, called “Work Is a Beautiful Thing.”
The commercial features real people doing real work in real factories all across America. It’s not very glamorous, but it’s honest and authentic, and I was honored to narrate it,” Rowe posted to his Facebook just after midnight.

The Ford spokesman answered numerous questions posed to him by those supportive and skeptical of the manufacturing campaign.
“Hey, I am on your side here, I want “made in America” too but make you’re sure on the side of the WORKER not the corporate greed side ok Mike? Love ya,” said Rose Marie Bayless.

Rowe responds by saying, “Love ya back, Rose, but no thanks.
You offer up a false and dangerous choice.
The world is bigger than “Workers vs. Bosses,” and so is this campaign. Remember,
Walmart thrives because a majority of Americans like to shop there. Like Apple, Discovery, Ford, and Facebook,
Walmart does not exist for the purpose of employing people.
No successful company does. Walmart’s first order of business is to serve their customer. Ultimately, the customer calls the shots. Not management. Not labor.
Jobs are just a happy consequence of that success.”

The two most valuable assets any company has are its customers, and its employees

Without customers their would not be any business to conduct.
Without the employees the customer wants/needs will not happen.
Piss off either one long enough and the business will fail.

wal mart is for wal mart no one else  yes just like us they are there to make $$$ ,but  most the people that go food shopping in walmart never check  prices of food or size of packages , they think they are in walmart it has to be cheaper ,  the Kroger store beats wal marts prices on 90% of what they sell , walmart  show's those ads where they beat the other  store  on the 10% of stuff they sell cheaper  but some of those items are less count or less oz or 20 cans of soda vs 24 at krogers /foodloin

Steve,

I have to disagree, Walmart is one of the best things that ever happened to this country. They have put 1000's of people to work in this country. YES, they manufacture a lot of product in china......but that's what Mike Row's ad is about. making more and more product here in the USA. If you really think they are that bad, don't let me catch you shopping in the one across from your house.
If it ain't broke.....Stop trying to fix it.

Another bad thing about Walmart is that they are big enough to demand a product at
so low of a price that the manufacturer  will lower the quality of their product to meet the price
that Walmart will pay.

Walmart was one of the first to bring in goods from China and demand that their suppliers match or beat
the prices that China could offer. Because of their size, anyone competing with them (everyone else) had to do the
same thing to survive. I believe Walmart deserves most of the blame for the collapse of American manufacturing. I have never
set foot in a Walmart or Sam's club and never will.

I have a love hate relationship with Walmart.
I like that Walmart brings in low prices. I hate that they have a crappy selection of goods especially in the packaged food space.  So I buy the cheap staple goods at Walmart then the other products at other stores. Unfortunately without the staple business the little guy becomes unsustainable. This then leaves me with 8 choices of cereal vs 42 at my speciality grocer.
I hate how they exploit their staff - they hire so many people that people become a commodity vs a valued part of the success equation. The reports I have read is that CostCo moralle and staff are 10x happier. We are not even talking about wages.   Would I want my spouse working at a walmart, have my friends come in and see her working. NFW. Target perhaps - Walmart never.
McD's is coming close to this too. The latest trend is to create self-order kiosks and eliminate the counter staff.  While I do not have a problem with a business being run more efficently I do have a problem with them again turning the remaining workers into commodities.
If you can't afford to lose you can't afford to win.

No, I bet Walmart does not manufacture any products. They're a supply house and buy products to sell in their stores. If a product has a Walmart label on it, it was made by another manufacturer and packaged with their label.

Another bad thing about Walmart is that they are big enough to demand a product at
so low of a price that the manufacturer  will lower the quality of their product to meet the price
that Walmart will pay.

Well I would like to say I have never set foot inside a Walmart, but the truth is I have, But I do not spend money their. I wonder if this campaign was their reply to the bashing they took over having donation food bins at the entrance of the stores for customers to donate food so their employees could enjoy a festive holiday? Ya, that's right. The stores asked for the customers to donate food to their employees.
