New Life for a 48-yr old Moose!
« on: September 01, 2014, 05:55:33 PM »
So what do you get when 2 model 742s get together? A Big Moose, of course! This game is actually two 742 cabinets welded together...look closely at the interior pic and you can see the weld on the floor of the cabinet...

This was a particularly "fun" one, as it has 3 (yes, THREE) Progressive units in the top box, 2 modified reel sets, and 1 modified hopper (hopper has 2 payout boards). Truly one of Bally's more custom creations....and it all happened in 1966! The cabinet is covered in dark brown Naugahyde leatherette (remember, after all, it was the 60's). It was apparently built (at least in part) by a mechanic by the name of "Big Bad Dave", and we have the handwritten note inside to prove it! If anyone knows a Dave who would have been building games for Bally at that time, please let him know he is a genius!

We acquired this machine in a batch of machines a few years ago, and was hesitant about it at first, as the glass had some fading. Then we spied a LIKE NEW reel and BELLY glass on a shelf of the warehouse it was in. It was fate, so on the truck the Big Moose went.

After going through the 50+ contacts, and well over 100 solder joints in the top box, repairing a dozen or so bad/loose solders, the Progressive units were back in action! After the payouts were gone through, and a few other minor details, it was time for reassembly.

After seeing the damage the fluorescents had done (in 48 years) to the belly glass, we were not eager to see that damage done to our "new" glass, so we opted to install LED strips in the belly. Well, then we just HAD to do the top glass in order for them to match! Now, all is cool, literally, and beautiful! We did, however, preserve all of the original light sockets and wires, and left those in place. For $20 or less in LEDs, we now have a beautiful game, in which the glass is perfectly preserved for many years to come!

Here's some pics of the finished product, and of the original belly glass when we took it out....

Wow Wow Wow...    :applause:   Outstanding machine and job done restoring it. How many coins can you play at a time. I thought my Metalist was a big machine. It would be great if you could post a short video of it being played.

In total, the machine plays 6 coins per pull. The machine is actually 2 independent 3 coin games (Left and Right game), that each have their own progressive. The Left game steps on coins 1, 3, & 5. the Right game steps on coins 2, 4, & 6. The 2 games combine for the large/top Progressive, where a combo of 6 symbols (3 from each Left and Right game) awards the BIg Moose Jackpot. Bally ingenuity at its finest...

Oh, and the cabinet is 24.5" wide, 3" larger than a Medalist I believe? Height is same, 47.5" w/o candle.

I have a video of the machine, just trying to get it posted somehow, since its too large...

EDIT: I will link a YouTube video just as soon as it uploads!

I'm alway looking for the odd or different Bally slot Machines. I have my Metalist and 3 MGM Lion Red glass machines that are pre fired. I have a Lowboy 955 5 line 5 coin, a 962 Lowboy 3 line 3 coin and a four reel dime machine I think it's a 989 with a double progressive. I'd like a Bingo, or a Dice version. Maybe. Monte Carlo.

Uh oh...I know where there's an almost MINT Dice game called Reel Dice. We bought it from a guy who's dad got it while working in a casino. It's beautiful. I'll get some pics or a video...

Other than that we have a few of the Hold n Draws (Quick Draw, Circus, Poker), a VERY unique Wheel of Fortune, a Cherries Jubilee Side-by-Side (automatic), and some other oddball 800 cabinet machines. Darrell loves the oddballs, and god knows we have put in some miles to get some of them!  :motorcycle: :motorcycle:

Cool thanks.. I'm always looking for the different machines. How many 809, or 873 machines can you own?

We can have as many as we'd like with our CA license (so that doesnt help with the addiction much, lol). Unlicensed residents have some restrictions, and they have to be 25yrs old of course.

Does California really enforce slot machine regulations for home use? If I had a dozen slots at home in California no one would know or care, not even  the state. I notice so-called illegal machines offered on the internet daily in California, and the owners are not too concerned. No one gets busted! :applause:

Ok ... and as I watch the coins put in, the progressive does not advance on any of the 3 JP's ... just wondering. Maybe I am just not understanding.

Aha! Dave wins the "Attention To Detail" award! Very observant!  :applause: :applause: :applause:

The progressives do increment 1/10th of a cent each play, however, only when the door is fully closed. We had just been digging coins out of the hopper to play it for the video, and did not fully close the door. Once the door switch is actuated, the progressives step as they should.

Maybe so a tech testing a machine on the floor didnt step up the progressive amount?

Well, yah probably, as I do not expect the hopper to hold that amount of coinage!

We're getting kinda bored and delving into EM, E1000, E2000 machines we have on hand that have been sitting for god knows how long. I will probably be posting some clips of different machines now and then. Its just something to do to help preserve what we can from years bygone.

Many of these machines had very specific engineering and mechanical work. It amazes me when I see some of them! We have a Swedish Circus machine that accepts 2 different coins, maybe the earliest Multi-denom? Or at least the start of Multi-denom? One type of coin gives one pay, second type of coin gives 2 plays...interesting to see how they were set-up, to say the least.
