Bally6000 - Candy board

Hello all

My Bally is giving me the 88FF error. I pulled the board to get the battery info to change and I noticed that the machine had a visitor from a house mouse that decided to store a ton of different types of chocolate candy on top of the board. For the most part I was able to clean it up however there are some candy pieces that melted onto the board...mostly looks like a nougat type of candy. I'm thinking from a Charleston Chew if you know what that is.

Anyhow what would be the best way to clean the board. I am NOT super great with electronics so I don't want to do more damage than is already there. Someone suggested using a freeze spray to chip it off. That sounds like it would make sense to me what are your thoughts....any specific type of spray or any other ideas would be appreciated.

I use spray cans of circuit board cleaner for flux and other gunk, but never candy. It's  called safety wash 2 or something like that.

That's one sweet game!!!   If you warm it up with hair dryer ?? Use popsicle stick to scrap it?

Sunrise Side is on to it with the hair dryer I think.  Get it to where the candy melts and clean it up with a wooden stick or plastic spudger.  Don't use a screwdriver or other metal object, you may damage circuit traces with that.  Once you get most of it off you can use good old soap and water and a tooth brush or something similar to clean the rest up.  Rinse it well, blow it off with compressed air, and that blow dryer (or set it in the sun) to dry it completely.

That's not the right battery on your MPU either.  It should be a 3.6V lithium AA battery.  The one installed is a 3.6V lithium 1/2AA which will only last about 1/2 as long as the AA.  If I recall correctly my S6000 batteries lasted about two years roughly, so you'll be changing it every year if you stick with the 1/2AA.  I also recommend getting a through hole AA battery holder and solder it on the board.  Then you won't need to do any soldering the next time it goes dead.  Here's a pic, it's a Gamemaker MPU board, but the same idea. 

Also using a pair of tweezers or something similar peel as much of the gaming tape off that you can.  Be careful around the original labels on the chips, they like to peel off with the tape.

If you are taking the time to install a battery holder, I recommend attaching a remote holder to the front of the mpu so you can hot swap batteries with the power on. No need to pull the board. You can do it with the aa size or upgrade to c or d cell size. See pic the wire leads go through the lock holes to the original solder holes

That's even better.  A larger battery will last longer and replacing it before it dies will save you from having to do a Safe RAM clear and setting everything back up.
