Enable Double Up feature
« on: January 01, 2019, 08:29:51 PM »
Hi all,
I bought a dead Players Edge (not plus) machine months ago and finally got it working today. Yeah! Anyhow, i have a few questions.

First, is there a way to enable the double up feature on the machine?

How do you get into diagnostics, options? Sorry, I’m a total noob.

Does the machine use 161 bulbs for the push buttons?

I’m super stoked to have it working. The battery on the MPU was toast, and a fuse was blown. Not sure why the fuse was bad as it hasn’t blown again. I did find a stray quarter laying on a circuit board, hopefully that was it.

Thanks!
James

Turn DIP switch 4 on for double up.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

So I think I discovered that my machine is actually a PE+. I thought it was a PE due to the lack of validation, but clearly I can change the double up feature via the menu. And it has 5 games on it (not sure if that was a feature of PE?).

Anyhow, the machine is working great other than burned out bulbs. Replacing the flouros seems easy enough. I pulled one of the button bulbs today and have no idea what they are. I was hoping it’d be a 555 (I’m a pinball guy and have a ton of them), but the bulbs are a lot smaller. I’ll see if I can find out what they are via the web, or if someone wants to help, anyone know what they are?

So happy to have it running! I need a manual as some of the menu options aren’t intuitive...

Take care,
James

Mark is spot on. I just replaced all of mine with LED's and they look fantastic. I'd def go that route if ya gotta replace some anyway, they look SO nice. If you have 5 games on your machine and double up option in the test menu you have not only a PE+ but a superboard in it as well, the original PE+ boards don't support multi-game chips. Sounds like a great setup. Throw some LED's in that baby and enjoy it! :)

That’s great! I’ll admit that I like the incandescent glow. Maybe from spending so many hours in casinos behind video poker machines. I bought the the machine for $50. Steal!

Anyone have a suggestion for a cost effective stand? I don’t want to drop $150 if I can avoid it.

WOW!! $50 and you can maintain it yourself without much issue?! Steal is an understatement! lol. If you prefer the incandescent lamps you can find them easily as well, I just happened to recently replace mine with the LED's and I love the look so I figured I'd throw that option out there for ya. As for stands they are expensive, I had 2 small dressers for lack of a better term. Short, sturdy and with a drawer under to keep my parts, for me they work great but are a pinch higher than I'd like. Basically the main thing for me is being sure they're sturdy and can support the machine weight. The drawer is just a nice bonus lol. I'm sure others will have ideas for you as well but I figured I'd share my solution to it as well, I wasn't about to spend $150 for just a stand, that's insane IMO

Well I love fixing things. Got kinda lucky on this one. Still not sure why the fuse was blown, we shall see if it happens again down the road.

I’m worried my button bulbs are some non-standard bulb. They are very small, about the size of a Christmas tee bulb. Maybe the 86 is it, will find out in a few days. The buttons are in decent shape and just need cleaned. So I’m hoping to get out on this cheap too.

I have an old console TV, probably from the 1950s. Was thinking of using it as a stand but am worried about the weight of the machine. I have two small boys and can’t risk someone getting hurt...

Yeah the bulbs are quite small as you described, mine were all replaced before I got my machine so no issues with them, but I figured they'd be larger. I believe ya said you found an odd quarter laying around which ofc could short things and blow a fuse. Good chance if it hasn't happened again, I've also just dealt with bad/weak fuses where they do blow and there's no issue to cause it, like a one and done so that does happen from my experience tho not overly often. I worked on heavy machinery for almost 20 years so I too love fixing things, I have nerve issues since 2014 in my lower back and legs so I just can't climb around and trace wiring and such anymore, hell walking is tough at times but if I was healthy I'd still be doing it, I learned a lot from work and still love fixing anything I can. SO you def got a steal, a lot of home slot/vp owners don't have the luxury of being mechanically/electronically inclined so again more of a steal for you! Yeah the machines are heavy, no kids here but just it supporting the weight was my main concern, with kids gotta be real safe, make sure it is nice and stable and supports the machine solidly

I just repaired a game today exactly as PinJim's and replaced a couple of #86 bulbs at the same time.  When you mentioned an LED bulb for the buttons it caught my attention.  Do you have a supplier or bulb # for the LED 6.3v application.  I have used LED bulbs in S2000's and GK's but not in a PE+ or an S+.  Thanks for any info.

I bought mine in a set of 10 from ebay from spinic (great seller btw, very nice and always went the extra mile for me in previous dealings) check spininc.com as well which is his site where they might be cheaper. Here's a listing off of ebay like I bought tho https://www.ebay.com/itm/T5-6-3V-LED-86Bulb-Led-6-3-Volts-Box-of-10-/121948375501?hash=item1c64b089cd it had been a while since I looked as I wanted to go LED years ago for the buttons and they were not common then and quite expensive. That listing gives ya an idea tho, mine are in and look great! I got a Game King finally a few months back and I gotta swap those out for LEDs as well. Wanna trade info? LOL. I have seen sets for the GK but no one sells 15 at a time, my GK was an igame so it has extra buttons for slot bets and I plan on doing all of them. Any of your info you have would help greatly :) But yeah spininc is good ppl and def has the PE+ LEDs you're looking for, either on ebay or his site :)

Thanks, I love tinkering on stuff. My first love is pinball. I inherited a dead machine was I was 20 and learned a lot about electronics by repairing. I earned a degree in electronics but already knew a lot about them just through pinball repair. I take great joy in buy dead machines and resurrecting them. Often it’s less than $10 in parts to fix electronics. Just a lost art I suppose...

Back to the video poker machine. So inerroneously assumes the fluorescent bulbs were 15”, but of course I was wrong. They are 14”. And I can’t seem to find a local source for them. Ugh. If only things were easy...

Still waiting for my 86 bulbs to arrive too.

I did have a small score. My 76 year old father is slowly getting rid of “stuff”, and he gave me a nice sturdy end table. Thinking it’ll be great as a stand for the video poker machine. You can’t beat free!

Take care,
James

Sorry you could not read the part number for the mini wedge bulb in my previous post.  It is T5 12 VDC, sku:  13528-0  from Spininc.  The bulbs from China look like a good deal.  Please let us know.

Glad you found the PE+ bulbs, I've had no issues with mine, they look good and like I said, great seller from my experiences. Mark if ya can do that it would be great buddy!! Sorry my contact has been kinda slim, I was ill thru the holidays, flareup I think from weather and maybe a cold on top of it. Hope you and yours had a great holiday Mark (and ev1 ofc) and a great new year!! :)

Well yet another question. I got 4 fluorescent bulbs in the mail and new starters. One light worked, no issues. However, the other fluoro blew immediately. I tried a second bulb with a different starter - same result, the bulb immediately blew. Both times the bulb illuminated for a split second and poof, it was done. Both bad bulbs won’t work in the good fixture.

I assume my ballast is toast. Anyone know where I can source an original, working ballast for an upright PE+? It’s the belly ballast, if that makes a difference.

Thanks!
James

Tryin to pay back a bit here. First, the 86 bulbs were right, thanks. Second, I bought a new ballast off of Amazon and not only did it work, but it fit perfectly - screws lined up and everything.

Edited to add the following part number information in case the Amazon link ever dies:
