Bally S5500 83f code. No Battery
« on: April 26, 2016, 06:28:21 PM »
Hi all. I have a Bally S5500 Stars and bars machine. Was fine but haven't used in in several months. Now its giving a 83f code which I believe is low battery.
problem is I cant find it anywhere. No its not soldered to the board. Came from casino. Is it possible they never put one? could it be somewhere else? Any help would be great.

The  purple component on this board is the location for the battery.

Thanks. I found the location on board but there is no battery. Never was. This machine worked fine for years with no battery. Never had a code 83f.
See pic.
Also there is some leakage from u62. Do you think that will be a problem?

Does your machine have a progressive display?
Also, are you sure that is leakage FROM U62 and not ON U62? I' ve never seen one of those chips leak anything

No progressive display.
Not sure where or if it is actually leaking.

Post a full picture of your board. As I recall I had a few that had a piggyback battery installed in an extender of the RAM socket. It was a sealed unit and non-replaceable.

I would have to believe that if the board was made to run without a battery, and by the manufacturer from the looks of it, then some circuit has gone bad and the fix they put in isn't working. Maybe a chip went bad or something of that nature. If that's the case, then putting a battery on isn't going to help. Have you checked thoroughly inside the cabinet to make sure there isn't a battery mounted somewhere and the machine was designed that way so it could be changed without having to remove the board to do it?

Yes it is clean like it was never there.
And like I said it worked fine for years.
So I guess the next step would be to install battery and see what happens

Must had some sort of circuit that maintained and stored a charge into a component like a cap. Have you tried leaving it turned on for 24 hours and then try a clear?

There must be cap that holds a charge and it is bad. Inspect/test your caps. There is jumper on a set of pins for the battery, you could try reseating the jumper.

Could you please explain how to test a cap. I'm no slot tech. I bought 15 slots and got them all working so I have some basic knowledge.

So I put a new battery in and did a reset. It still gives a 83f code.
What's next? Should I replace the board or mains?

Not sure if you have 9200 mains or 9500 mains. Does not have the labels to identify which mains they are. Not sure if one of the test will show what the mains are?  If you used the jumper to do a clear and it did not work you will need clear chips to do a clear. Also before you do the clear , press the small buttons a dozen times each to be sure they get a good connections. The contacts in the buttons do oxidize from age and not being used.

SafeRAMâ„¢ Clear Procedure
For a Complete, Full, or Partial SafeRAMâ„¢ Clear,
turn the machine power OFF. Set the jumper J10.
Complete - Press and hold the PSEUDO COIN and
TEST buttons, then switch power ON. When the message
CH C displays in WIN PAID, release the PSEUDO COIN and
TEST buttons. The CH C message is followed by CL C.
Full - Press and hold the PSEUDO COIN button, then
switch power ON. When the message CH F appears in
WIN PAID, release the PSEUDO COIN button. The CH F
message is followed by CL F.
Partial - Switch power ON. The message CH P
displays in WIN PAID. The CH P message is followed by
CL P.
If an error was detected during SafeRAMâ„¢ Clear
as designated by E C, E F, E P in WIN PAID, repeat the
operation.
Upon a successful SafeRAMâ„¢ Clear, the button and
tower lamps flash. Switch power OFF and replace the
J10 jumper.
Replace MPU Assembly and switch machine
power ON. The machine will enter a Reel Calibration
procedure whereby the home position is recorded in
SafeRAMâ„¢. For tilt-free operation it is important that the
procedure completes without interruption
