If the coins are going to the bottom, they're probably following the chute that diverts them there. You will find a diverter relay that allows that.

Here is a modification I do on my E series machines. You can see the coin diverter needs to be pulled in so that the coins land in the hopper:

The machine was made so that in a casino if the hopper gets full of coins the machine would cause the coin chute to move to a different position so inserted coins would then go to a bucket inside the stand the machine sits on. There is a hole in the top of the stand that lines up with the hole in the bottom of the machine.

You may not be missing a part, it may be that your diverter is going to the "hopper full" position to send the coins down to the stand bucket. There is a solenoid coil in your machine that moves the diverter chute from one position to the other. If you can post a photo of this area on your machine someone can tell you more about it. One way to fix this is what ramegoom mentioned.

Be careful about having a machine hanging half off its stand, it can tip forward and fall onto someone, especially if they are pulling the handle.

Are the coins dropping down to where they would fall into the coin tray on front of the machine for the player, or are the coins dropping into a hole in the bottom of the machine so they would go into the stand?

Take a look at the photo ramegoom posted, you can see the coin diverter, it is a piece of metal attached to the solenoid coil, located just below where the coins drop out of the coin acceptor. Is your machine missing this part?

Definitely looks like the coin diverter to the hopper has been removed. Look at the photo I posted; you could rig something up to simulate that metal diverter that would reside directly below the coin outlet of the comparitor, to place each coin into the hopper. It would be a simple chute.

Here's another view of the coin path on an E-2000 machine (thanks ramegoom!). Maybe you can see how the diverter is a smaller metal shelf-like piece that moves when the solenoid turns on or off. It looks like the diverter shelf moves inward toward the door when the solenoid is turned on, that causes the coins to drop against it and go to the hopper. If the diverter solenoid is turned off the diverter moves outward away from the door and the coins then fall straight down to the overflow chute. I don't have one of these machines but that seems to be how it works.

If you can't get the replacement piece from someone selling parts you can probably do as ramegoom suggests, make a coin chute or shelf from sheet metal or tin and attach it to the door under your coin acceptor with a couple of screws. May need to fold the edges back to stiffen it and make it less likely someone gets cut on the sharp edges.
