I was looking through the forum and when I saw this thread, I realized it was about a game that I had recently purchased from the OP.

I have been interested in expanding beyond the S2000 that I have owned for years and wanted to get both a newer and an older machine.  For the older machine, I wanted to get a Bally EM and had been looking around Craigslist for something suitable.  During my search, I contacted a local slot machine technician but he didn't stock EM machines.  He mentioned that if I got one cheap enough, it might be worth repairing as he had lots of parts and could do the work.

With an asking price of $215 for a 742A "Deuces Wild", I figured I couldn't go too far wrong.  I thought I could use it as a way to learn about EM games with little risk.  Once I got it home, I stumbled onto the reason that the reels wouldn't lock; there was a coin jammed in the timing mechanism.  I then discovered that it wasn't paying out because the coin hopper needed to be reset.

Unfortunately, there was a lot more wrong than just that.  The main problem was that the pull lever wasn't locking so you could play a game without inserting a coin.  The con acceptor wasn't registering a coin being received.  The payout on certain combinations wasn't working correctly.  I decided I was in way over my head and took it to the slot technician I had been in touch with.  He replaced the coil that locked/unlocked the pull lever and got that fixed.  He figured out that the payout problem was due to one of the reels being put back on 1/4 turn off.  There were some other minor problems plus the belly glass was upgraded to a great looking glass from a now closed Reno casino.

Although I didn't learn how to fix the slot machine, I did end up with a nice addition to my collection.  The only thing it needs is a new reel glass as the existing one has some damage from when the denomination was replaced and is a bit faded.  I'm not sure if I will be able to find that.

Nice machine, classified section on this site or eBay is the a good place to find reel glass.
Also, some members on this site have glass that they may part with.

Hello SIMPLE SAM!
You may want to mention that the Reel Glass being on a Deuces Wild 742a Bally does have a unique glass being that the Pear symbols are used on the reel strips and of course show on the reel glass for the Payout Award!
As I had mentioned when you picked it up I had gone thru all my glass but could not find one of that style as it is a very unique and hard to find glass but possibly someone out there has one!
And yes, it did have many different issues and hopefully I caught all of them for you but as I mentioned I stand behind my work so please let me know if issues occur!
I had to really think out side the box on the payout issue as I ran across something I have never seen before, somewhere during its lifetime someone had removed the reel disc from the reel hub for whatever reason, who knows, but then replaced it 1/4 turn off which of course did not allow the payouts to correspond to the symbols on the payline!
Being this occurred on the third reel smaller pays would work but nothing involving the third reel!
Took me a little while to figure that out but once I ascertained the symbols were 5 symbols off a light went on in my head that the reel disc was mis-aligned!
There were other issues with the hopper payboard assembly and reel mech switches, Etc.
Anyway, Simple Sam, I will be restoring the 873 for you as time allows if you are still interested in it!
Thank you for your business!
Bona Fortuna!

Being in the business of making signs. I was able to reproduce the reel glass and jackpot marquee on top.
But its not very cost effective. Probably have a good days time in artwork and labor.

Great Job there, DavidLee!
Looks very good!
Yes, I understand cost effective, if it's for yourself it's a Labor of Love but to do it for someone else and honestly bill for time spent it is definitely not cost effective!
His marquee was in pretty good shape but had a tiny crack in the lower right corner that at some time someone had reinforced with some trim and screwed to the marquee base but I was able to trim out the marquee with some extra trim strips I had that were a little wider but looked fine and installed a new marquee base with out the screw holes!
Anyway, your work looks good!
Ciao!

If anybody has the reel glass in nice condition, I'd be interested in purchasing it.  As Monti mentioned, it's not that common.

David Lee, that looks great but way beyond my skill level.  I'm not sure I even want to attempt to touch up the black on the one I have; I wouldn't want to make it worse.

You could always pickup some black construction paper and scotch tape the black paper over the bad spot.
Please remember to make a donation to NLG for mine/our help in repairing your machines problem.. Your donations help keep this site on line.
And remember...
If it's jammed, force it.. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyways...

I'm still looking for a reel glass but haven't had much luck with my WTB ad.  I sent an email to Coos a week ago to see if that was a viable option but he hasn't responded.  Anybody else know of a source for the reel glass?

I got the reel glass and a reproduction Bally Fruit belly glass from Coos.  Because both pieces are mirrored, I had him print them rather than go with a transfer.  It was more expensive but the results are fantastic.

Did you have to send them your old glass? How long did it take? I need a Belly glass made for a Bally Monte Carlo. Mines broke into many pieces.

Coos had already done both glasses previously so he already had the artwork completed. The lead time was brief, only about two weeks. I ended up buying a second bally fruit because the shipping is a fixed cost (70 euros) and adding a glass made the delivered price per glass cheaper. Because I purchased the second bally fruit after the first two were completed, it took a little longer.

I'm in this machine way more than it's worth but it is really nice. The glass was expensive but I'm very pleased with the results.

Here's some photos of the two pieces of glass.  It was hard to get a decent picture as they are so reflective that it catches me or the background in the photos.  I tried to take the photos from the side which kind of distorts it.  The belly glass I took where there was little light but the photo isn't very representative of how the glass actually looks.  In reality, both glasses look awesome.

Photos enhanced to look like they really are!
