IGT S+ Resets itself to 61 code

Hi everyone.  Hoping someone has a solution.  I picked up an S+ machine VERRY cheap. Owner was actually throwing it out. It's a round top triple diamond. Top glass is cracked in multiple areas. Game chip is 731. Reel chip not labeled. Board in overall decent shape with no signs of damage. There was no battery. There was no battery holder. ( I should add that I have other slot machines, so I am familiar with them...but not a fan of S+). Anyway, after soldering in a holder, I put a fresh battery in, and did a clear of the machine. All went well.  Wouldn't take coins at all. After a few tests, I swapped out the optics board with a known good one, and it took coins. I was able to play the machine. With the credit light lit, I built up about 150 credits.

Problem #1. No reel sound. All other sounds work. Solenoid stop sound, no reel spin sound.

Problem #2. If I shut the machine off, and turn it back on, it automatically goes to 61. Then I have to press the test button to 61-1. Close door. Turn key. 65-1. Open door. Hold test button, and game cycles reels and I can play again.

I pulled the board and checked the pins, but all are good. I inspected the backplane,  but no rust or damage. 

I do have another S+, and it's set to pay in credits. If I turn that one off, and turn it on..it goes back to where I left it, with the credits I left.

Any thoughts to why it would default back to 61?

I need to ask you a couple of questions.
When you get to the [61] code after re-powering the machine, and  after clearing it, try checking the internal accounting by turning the J/P Reset key once.
The numbers now shown on the display will be the "Total Coins In".
If you then press the Spin button, you should get to page 2, and the numbers in the display shown would be the "Total Coins Out" numbers.
If these two pages are empty, or show a "zero", then that means the battery holder, and battery you've soldered in, is not retaining the accounting memory in the CMOS chip.
That could be the reason why the [61] keeps coming back when you power on the machine - it keeps forgetting that you've already cleared it.
The CMOS memory chip is located next to the SP GAME PROM socket on the MPU board.

Another problem but somewhat rare could also be a going eeprom chip on the backplane/motherboard.
It may be having trouble retaining memory as well....it gets re-written to, every 100 spins....but you haven't played any spins yet.
However, over time and age, it can begin to corrupt - causing memory problems.
It's really quite rare for those to go tho.
It's a small 8-legged chip located at the left-most side of the motherboard that's on the floor your MPU pushes down into.

For now tho, I'd concentrate on the battery you've changed...even though you haven't gotten a code [12].
When setting up the machine for the 1st time after clearing, can you tell us what steps you did?
Maybe there's a clue in that?

The reel sounds can be changed in the settings.
I have attached a quick sheet on common settings.

The 61 shows up when you do a game change.
Specifically when your game chip is changed from one game to another.
If you keep your 731 in place, swap it to another reel chip you typically do not get a 61.
As a first step - I would pull and reseat your 731.

Regarding the game change. There are also two CMOS chips which hold all the counters and such, games last played etc.
When you change your game chip these two CMOS chips are wiped - and the 61 error is cut.
The 65 error means the two chips are not in sync.
This is likely the cause.

One of these chips is on the MPU (Removeable board) and the other is on the Motherboard (small fixed board) in the machine.
It is possible one of them has reached its useful life.
I would pull and reseat these chips.

Despite not being a fan you mentioned you had another S+ (I guess you need 3 or more to be a fan - ha ha).

You could pull the MPU out of the other machine and swap them.
You will go through the 61 and likely a 65 on at least one of the machines.
Then turn it off / on and see if the error comes back.

If the problem moves with the MPU then its likely the CMOS chip on the MPU that needs replacing.
If the problem remains with the chassis then its likely the CMOS chip on the motherboard.

Once again (depending on your comfort level) you could borrow a CMOS chip from the known working machine and try it on the non working one to prove that the CMOS is bad.
It could be a bad MPU all together but this chip swap would at least eliminate the CMOS as a probable cause.

Thanks for the help and advice! I did collect S+ machines at one point, but moved on to S2000 and others. My one S+ I held on to is  Spin till you Win. .only because it's hard to find.
Anyway.. upon taking a second look at the board, my negative side battery was loose. I guess while rushing, I didn't check my work. Lesson learned. The battery is now secure, and when I power up, all is good. While I had the board out, I checked the dip settings, and noticed #3 was off.  1,2 and 4 were on. I flipped #3 on, and reinstalled.  We now have reel spin sound!

I'm still looking for a top glass, and the bill validator is not working. The back of the BV one big plug that's attached, and maybe 3 that are just hanging. Not sure where they plug into. .but im guessing that's why the BV isn't even cycling. I did make sure I put the BV chip in, and made sure it's set at 9-1, so that's not the problem.

Now we know why the [61] code kept coming back right?
Poorly soldered battery connections.
Get your camera back out.
Show us the bill validator connectors that are connected, and the ones not connected.
Maybe someone here will see what's wrong.

Do NOT connect or dis-connect those with the power switch ON.
If you did, then that may explain why your bill validator, is not working.

Super glad you got it working.

Now the question becomes - are you looking for new "Casino Night" glass or are you looking for Triple Diamond to match the bottom glass.
Or perhaps bottom glass to match the top.

Your also not tied to the theme thats in it, new glass, reel strips and a couple of chips this can be any theme your want.

Well, I think I figured out thr bv problem. As I was playing around with it, I kept smelling an odd, machine burning type smell. I shut the machine and pulled the bv out. It was extremely hot, and definitely where the smell was coming from. Frozen motor? I can turn it by hand..so not sure why it is burning up. It's an s+, so can play without it. Not putting it back in. I have a ton of validators, but the plug us different on this one. Brings me too my next question.  This machine has I think 3 connections on the bill validator,  and one big black plug. I have known working bill validators with assembly that are not being used, and have the same 3 connections in the back, but none have that big black plug. The plug goes to the power supply on the validator assembly. The others I have do not have their own power supply. I hope I'm explaining this correctly. 

I'd like to keep the Triple Diamond theme, but still haven't located a top glass to match. I do have the strips for Casino Night, but not the chip. I actually have tons of strip sets. .but yes, I am aware you can change the theme. My Spin till you win started life as a triple diamond, and I somehow aquired the spin/win set, so I changed it.  I even have WOF strips. The s+ machines confuse me on what chips to use with what, so I don't mess with it. I have a few chips with numbers on them in my bin, but no idea what machine they came out of.

This particular machine was basically given to me. I am able to play it now, but it's a project machine. The bv I don't really care about. Would be nice, but I don't have to have it. The lights on the buttons don't work, but if I open the door, they work fine. As I'm closing the door, they turn off. Frankenmachine.  I'm not losing sleep over it.

Somewhat misnamed but the SS REEL chips are for different games such as Double Diamond, Triple Bonanza, Wild Cherry, etc etc.
The REEL chips basically contain the reel stops for the award tables.
