500 Series Varta Battery Removal
« on: August 25, 2016, 05:15:40 PM »
Hello Folks,

So I was given information about this green VARTA battery being on my MPU board.... and it sure is corroded!   Upon inspecting it, it doesn't look like it's fully damaged any components near it... I want to remove it, but there is literally no space to use snips without touching the board with metal, I'm deathly afraid to do this without damaging the board.  I also heard that some people weren't able to use their boards after removal.  If these boards aren't that expensive I have no problem buying a new one that has the battery already removed, but if this step is easy enough I'll just remove it.   As far as soldering, I see the solder under neat the battery which is not accessible.   Guys, is it safe to just pull this battery off with force or twist? It's pretty snug on there!

I attached pictures for you to review.  I'm also concerned about this battery shorting out while removing it and damaging the board and or shorting the battery out and then it blows up!

500 series boards will work fine without the Varta battery.  The enhanced 1270 boards need it or must have the voltage regulator removed as well.

You can twist it off with your hands or a pair of pliers.  Twist it back and forth sideways until the side with one tab breaks, then flip it back and forth until the two on the other side break.  Clean up any corrosion that is on the board and you should be in good shape.

When you say "Twist" back and forth and sideways, what do you mean? Rock it back and forth sideways along the green strip, or rock it back and forth along the metal side? Or grab the battery and twist clockwise?

Grab the green part and twist it parallel to the surface of the board

Or heat up the legs with a soldering pencil and pull it off

I have had great luck just melting the solder while pulling, comes out easy every time.

All of the above will work.  Twisting it back and clockwise/counterclockwise parallel to the board should break the side with one metal tab, then move it up and down to break the other two.  I used to recommend using a soldering iron until I've seen some of the boards that others have tried soldering on for the first time.

Clippers, twisting, desoldering, whatever it takes, just get rid of it.
