Monitor keeps going out
« on: May 16, 2020, 09:43:15 PM »
Hello everyone,
I have a IGT 044 IGame and whenever I powered it up I heard a loud thud noise. At the moment, the monitor is being unreliable. Soemtimes I hear a loud popping noise and it says “No Signal”. I power the machine off and then restart he MPU. It does the trick sometimes. Then I close the door and some times it goes out and others the monitor stays on. I’ve checked the MPU for overheating  and bent pins. I checked the connections in the door. The weird thing is that the monitor works reliably when the door is wide open. I am not sure what’s going on

When the monitor led goes from green to red it means it lost the signal from the source.  My guess is that when you close the door, the vibration or motion is causing a wire to disconnect.  I don't know what your wiring is like, but does justling the wires that come out of the door also cause the same issue.  All it takes is one sync wire to be loose or damaged that will cause that momentary connection loss.  Inspect the video signal coming off the backplane and make sure it is not loose.  It is connector J5 and it is in the top row of connectors, kind of in the middle of the backplane.  The wire should run to the back of the monitor where the monitor plugs into the cabinet.  I would also try re-seating the LCD just to make sure it is a nice connection.  The lights on the MPU are in a normal state and closing the door does not change any of them.  If something was happening to the MPU, the game would reboot and you wouldn't just get the image back.

I did remove the wire harness coverings to search for any exposed wires. There were none. I did flex the wires up and down to see what would happen. Nothing happened with the fully door opened. The monitor stayed on. Also when I open and close the door slowly, the monitor stays on. I am not sure what’s happening

I was also referring to the wires that go from the door into the cabinet.  Give those a jiggle to see if anything happens with the door opened.

I did flex the door harness wires up and down and nothing happened. I closed the door again and the monitor stays on. But when I jiggle the door, the monitor goes to “no signal”. The whole thing has been weird.

Forgot to add: Does a shorted wire often get worse like a bad monitor staying on for less and less time?

No, a short is just a wire getting ground or power when it shouldn't.  It is not a decaying situation like a bad cap or something similar.  It is weird that the door would cause any issues by itself, there's nothing related to the video signal on the door, if a short happens on the mpu, the whole thing would reboot, so the image wouldn't just come back, you'd have to wait for the entire boot process.  So it sounds like a kinked wire of some sort and when you close the door, you are putting enough stress on the cabinet, that it bends the frame of the monitor to cause whatever the issue is to manifest itself.  At this point I gotta believe it is something harness related.  Where you able to pull the monitor out?  You may just want to check the wiring on the monitor itself.  I'm thinking either the harness that goes between the cabinet's beau plug (Black plug where the monitor plugs in) and the LCD assembly, or the cable between the beau plug and the backplane.  Does applying pressure to the metal frame of the monitor from either side do anything?  I'm just wondering what it is about the door closing that is causing the no signal issue.  Try applying pressure to the left side of the cabinet and the right side of the cabinet, I'm just wondering if you can duplicate the situation without moving the door.
